The Smithy is part of a sensitively renovated farm, which combines rural charm with stylish design.

The Smithy is a chic one-bedroom retreat that forms part of a stylishly renovated farm steading in a picturesque corner of Northumberland. Conveniently sandwiched between the county’s prized coastline and National Park, The Smithy makes the perfect rural getaway for two. The spacious open-plan kitchen, dining and living area and peaceful en-suite bedroom combine high-end fittings and contemporary styling with country comforts like reclaimed timber trusses and posies of freshly-picked flowers. A stable door opens from the kitchen onto the tranquil stone courtyard, where a table and chairs invite you to linger over a morning coffee or evening aperitif.

While guests enjoy a sense of blissful isolation at The Smithy, the property is in fact just a few minutes’ drive from the village of Chatton, which boasts an excellent village shop stocked with an array of local produce and the Percy Arms, an inviting country pub known for its excellent food. It’s also under ten minutes' drive from Chillingham Castle, considered to be England’s most haunted castle and home to the only wild cattle in the world, sole survivors of herds that once roamed the forests of Britain. A little further down the road, you’ll find St Cuthbert’s Cave, thought to be where the monks of Lindisfarne brought St. Cuthbert’s body in AD875, following Viking raids on the Holy Island.

Indeed, thanks to its setting between Northumberland’s coast and National Park, The Smithy is within half an hour’s drive to many of the county’s most popular attractions, including Bamburgh Castle, the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the picturesque coastal town of Seahouses and Alnwick Castle. Outdoorsy types will find endless pleasure in the 400 square miles of sheep-dotted hills, meandering river valleys and rugged moorland within Northumberland National Park; keen walkers can tackle the 62.5-mile-long St Cuthbert’s Way trail (or perhaps just sections of it), which passes close by to the cottage; and cyclists can explore the 120-mile-long Sandstone Way cycle path, which also skirts the cottage.

The Smithy is part of a new steading development and can be booked in conjunction with the adjacent cottage, The Stables (sleeps 4), and The Steading (sleeps 10) opposite.

The Little Things We Love

We love the way the cottage has the feel of an old barn but with all the mod cons we need for cooking up a treat after a day exploring in the hills.

Don't take our word for it...

This was my second stay at The Smithy and it certainly won't be my last; I love this cottage! The Smithy is spotlessly clean and very well-appointed throughout. Its location is ideal, with easy access to both the Cheviot hills and the sublime Northumberland coastline. Chatton, with its Post Office/Village Store, is a five-minute drive away; I always buy sandwiches there before the day's adventure. All in all, I highly recommend this accommodation.

Don't take our word for it...

A Fantastic place to stay and explore Northumberland. This had everything we needed for a comfortable stay and it was really easy access to so many places. Our favourites were Bamburgh beach, Seahouses, Cragside, and Alnwick. We will be back!
Mr Elliott, 17th September 2024

Don't take our word for it...

A well equipped and comfortable cottage from which to explore this amazing area. Northumberland has been such a find and we've only scratched the surface! We have loved everything we have done we will definitely be back!
Mrs & Mr Scott, 20th August 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We have enjoyed many holidays at The Stables at West Lyham, and now The Smithy. A perfect bolt-hole for two. Fabulous cottage and luxurious place to relax and enjoy the surroundings. We will definitely be back.
Mr & Mrs Murray, 1st August 2024

Don't take our word for it...

The Smithy at West Lyham provided us with a location central to our planned days out. It was both rural (quiet) and yet easily accessible to the A1. Entry to the property was straight forward and we were pleased with the condition and cleanliness of the property which was spotlessly clean. The welcome hamper was gratefully received. We had a quiet, peaceful and relaxing stay at the Smithy and would have no hesitation in staying again. We had some lovely days out visiting the local area and especially our walk in Harthorpe Valley. Having never visited Northumberland before, we very much enjoyed the scenery/beaches it had to offer and the quiet roads.
Mr & Mrs Clarkson, 2nd April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

Wow! What a wonderful house. Loads of space for all of us to spread out and relax without feeling crowded at all. The house is very well equipped - everything that you could want is there. We all had a wonderful time visiting various beaches and castles as well as numerous eateries when out and about in the area. The dogs had a great time playing on the beach and in the sea!
Kendall family, 2nd April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

First holiday in Northumberland, and not disappointed. Great accommodation, very clean and comfortable. Amazing beaches and scenery. Thank you for the welcome hamper - much appreciated and enjoyed. Lovely to meet the owners and we hope to come back and stay in the Steading with family in the future.
Mr & Mrs Harding, 2nd April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

Just the relaxing short break we needed at this time of year, lovely cottage and very peaceful area. Thank you for the flowers and welcome pack, real treat. Good base to explore inland and the coast. Will be back...
