A Century of Traditional Fish Smoking in Craster
L. Robson & Sons, world-famous for their traditional fish smoking, have been producing legendary Craster Kippers and smoked salmon for almost 100 years. Nestled in the picturesque harbour village of Craster on Northumberland’s rugged coastline, this family business continues to cure fish using traditional methods, smoking them above whitewood shavings and oak sawdust for up to 16 hours.
Visitors to Craster can experience this rich tradition first-hand. The smokehouse, with its minimal signage, overlooks the harbour, while the adjacent shop buzzes with locals and tourists. The enticing scent of wood smoke guides visitors to the courtyard, where herring are transformed into famous kippers. The Craster Restaurant offers delightful dishes, perfect for a leisurely lunch or a refuelling stop before exploring Northumberland’s stunning coast. The shop is open daily, offering a variety of smoked and fresh fish, including smoked salmon, haddock, and cod, as well as fishcakes and pâtés.
Craster and its surroundings boast breathtaking coastline and countryside, with nearby attractions such as Dunstanburgh Castle and the villages of Warkworth and Rennington. Whether strolling by the sea, catching crabs, or enjoying outdoor activities like walking, golfing, and cycling, Northumberland offers a memorable experience for all.
