Complete with cheerful, coastal interiors and uplifting scenery, this cosy two-bedroom cottage is ideally placed for seaside exploring.

Midway between Bamburgh’s pretty village and the jolly harbour town of Seahouses, Lyme Grass has the best of both worlds. Yes, it has a sleepy, slumberous rural location, soundtracked by the odd “baa” or whinny – and yet the sea is constantly visible and you’re only a five-minute drive from provisions, pub dinners and glorious beaches.

The home is one of three adjoining, former workers’ cottages – the others being Wild Rye and The Rushes. Its rustic, unassuming façade gives way to deceptively spacious and stylish interiors which have been refurbished of late. Just like its neighbours, Lyme Grass is a single-floor property with two bedrooms: ideal for anyone of limited mobility.

Inspired by Northumberland’s beautiful coast, the cottage’s interior design establishes an easy, breezy vibe. Bedroom walls are the relaxing, sage-green hue of tufty marram grass that grows in dunes, while cheery artworks portray puffins or beach huts.

Clean, neutral hues and straight lines await in the airy, modern kitchen-dining room, along with a four-person table. In the lounge, an apex ceiling also emphasises light and space, although autumn cosiness is easily engineered as two double sofas frame a wood-burning stove. Both bedrooms – a master with a king-size bed, and another where zip-and-link twins convert into a king – share a large bathroom. Its tub is heaven after long beach walks.

Your large, enclosed lawned garden also looks seawards. Visible – often over sheep, horses or hay bales – is white Farne Lighthouse, on the historic isle where St Cuthbert died. A charcoal barbecue and outdoor furniture allow for memorable al-fresco meals facing this way.

Bamburgh’s excellent independent shops include a village butcher and The Pantry, a delicatessen able to prepare picnics or sandwiches for your day out. That might be to iconic Bamburgh Castle, set fair on a mighty basalt crag, or the namesake white-sand beach below. It may be a visit to meet the Farne Islands’ real-life puffins; boat tours sail from Seahouses. Or it could be an adventure to Lindisfarne, a little north, or kipper-producing Craster, slightly south.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION

For guests looking to holiday together, this cottage can be booked alongside Wild Rye New Shoreston or The Rushes New Shoreston (both sleeping 4 in each).

OUTSIDE

To the rear of the cottage is a large, fully enclosed lawned garden with patio, outdoor furniture and a charcoal barbecue (guests must bring their own charcoal).

Guests can park in front of the cottage for unloading but there is otherwise two designated parking spaces for each property at the end of the row of the cottages. The cottages sit on a working farm and the road is used by large farm vehicles therefore parking to the front of the cottages should be avoided.

The access road to the cottages is a minor road that leads onto the farm access road.

Location

Guarded by the iconic Bamburgh Castle which rises from its volcanic promontory with an almost mythic authority, this charming village combines the best of Northumbrian hospitality with a stretch of coastline with AONB status. Miles of stunning white sands stretch beneath the castle, from which you can take in views of the wildlife-rich Farne Islands and the fascinating Holy Island of Lindisfarne. Perfect for long dog walks, games, or quiet reflection, it's no wonder this is one of the most beloved beaches in the country.

You can enjoy fantastic fresh seafood at several restaurants in the village, perhaps during a relaxed brunch or with a takeaway from the Walled Garden Café, while the numerous tearooms and ice-cream shops are perfect for afternoon treats. There are also several great pubs for cosying up by the fire with a drink in the evening.

The whole area is bursting with things to do, dotted by a trail of castles and fortifications interspersed with pretty seaside villages all the way up and down the coast. For day trips, why not cross the causeway to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne to trace the legend of St Cuthbert, explore The Alnwick Garden, or take a boat trip from Seahouses to spot puffins and seals in the outstanding Farne Islands nature reserve and seabird sanctuary.

The Little Things We Love

The blend of bucolic peace and sightseeing convenience - such a perfect balance is really hard to find.

Don't take our word for it...

The cottage was lovely, very clean and had everything we needed. We very much appreciated the welcome pack which included milk so we could have a cup of tea on arrival. The bed was super comfortable. The garden was perfect for our dachshunds. It is a perfect place for peace and quiet with gorgeous views of the Farne islands and superb walks on the beach are just a half-mile walk away. Thank you for a wonderful holiday, we would love to come back.
Mrs Woodcock, 20th March 2025

Don't take our word for it...

We have had a fantastic week exploring Northumberland and staying in the fabulous Lyme Grass accommodation. The accommodation provides the perfect environment to relax after enjoying a day of exploring the surrounding areas. The decoration and furnishing has been done tastefully and we loved staying here. The view from the accommodation was stunning and we enjoyed watching the hares in the fields, along with deer and the little owls. The welcome pack was also a lovely gesture and much appreciated. There are still a lot more places for us to visit and we hope we have the opportunity to stay here again and enjoy what Northumberland has to offer. Also like to thank Crabtree & Crabtree for their professionalism.

Don't take our word for it...

Lyme Grass was a peaceful, well presented, comfortable and well equipped holiday cottage. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would definitely book there again. The location was perfect for sightseeing and long walks on the fantastic beaches. It’s was our first visit to Northumberland and we were very impressed!

Don't take our word for it...

Lyme Grass cottage provided the most wonderful home for a week to explore beautiful Northumberland. The cottage was extremely comfortable and well equipped. The garden has a view of the Farne Islands and we even saw hares running in the field below providing the tranquillity needed for a get away. The location is excellent. 5 minute drive to Bamburgh and stretches of unspoilt beaches and coastal path. Highly recommend a meal in The Potted Lobster. We were out of season for the bird life but the boat trip to Lindisfarne and around the Farne islands was excellent and saw plenty of seals. I also look forward to using Crabtree and Crabtree again as their service was without fault. Thank you.
