An artistic bolthole tucked away in the eaves of a beautifully restored former granary on the vibrant Papple Estate.

Light filled, airy and finished to an exceptional standard, The Granary Art Apartment is a sleek, modern retreat housed in a renovated granary building on the Papple Estate in rural East Lothian. This carefully restored steading also encompasses a contemporary art gallery as well as Eve’s Court, the estate’s sophisticated café and wine bar.

Enter the apartment via a striking outdoor staircase, which leads you into the convivial open-plan kitchen and living area, where an abstract feature wall takes centre stage. Showcasing bold colours in a geometric pattern, it was designed and hand painted by a local artist. Reflecting the hues of the wall is a striking statement rug, complemented by a vibrant red sofa and armchairs.

In the kitchen and dining area, white-washed walls, a generous skylight and bespoke kitchen cabinetry are calming and quietly luxurious, paired with an electric Rayburn oven in shade Olivine. The large mahogany dining table is the perfect setting for dinners spent reminiscing about the day’s adventures and admiring the eye-catching artwork.

The three bedrooms – two cosy doubles and a single – are understated in décor, drawing your eye to the beautiful handcrafted wooden headboards, matching cabinetry and industrial-style wall-mounted lights. Dressed in soft grey metro-titles, the bath and shower rooms feature powerful showers, heated towel rails and contemporary fittings.

Outside, you’ll have shared use of the extensive grounds of the delightful Papple Estate. To the rear of the property, you’ll find the paddock which is ideal for outdoor activities such as games of rounders, picnics or a restorative yoga session taking in the view of nearby Traprain Law.

A woodland area comes complete with wooden follies – hand-crafted shelters which can be used as wildlife watching hides, playhouses or picnic shelters – plus plenty of boardwalks and bridges to explore. Make sure to keep a lookout for the resident wildlife, including hares, badgers, owls, and bats. The wider estate includes a wildflower meadow dissected by Papana Water and a further 18 acres of ancient woodland, perfect for walking.

Home to more than 30 pieces of art, and a varied programme of exhibitions and events, you’ll find the Richard Demarco Gallery housed within the main steading building. Next door, Eve’s Court café and wine bar showcases the finest quality local food from the region’s producers, making it the perfect spot for a morning cup of coffee, an indulgent meal, or a glass of wine or two.

For larger groups, all five properties at Papple Steading can booked together (sleeping up to 25) - Papple Farmhouse sleeping 8, Grieve’s Cottage sleeping 8, Shepherd’s Bothy and Ploughman’s Bothy both sleeping 2, and The Granary Art Apartment sleeping 5 - the perfect base for large family get-togethers or groups of friends who would love a getaway without compromising on space.

Location

The nearest village of East Linton (5 miles) has a small Co-op supermarket, newsagents and Farm Shop at The Mart, which sells a wide range of locally sourced, high-quality produce. Plus, there's a lovely cafe there too to refuel before browsing their gift shop or craft fair held on Saturdays and Sundays each week. Also worth visiting is Bostock Bakery for their wonderful bread, pastries, cakes and coffee - but get there early, as there's often a queue, but it's definitely worth waiting in line for.

Extensive shopping and amenities can be found in Haddington (5.5 miles) where you will find an excellent selection of grocers, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gift, clothes shops and craft galleries. Here, you can relax and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes, delicatessens or tea rooms in the town, including The Loft for fabulous artisan bread and oven-fresh produce. The Waterside Bistro is very good for a bite to eat.

For more elegant dining, head to Gullane (14 miles) for delicious seafood and award-winning cuisine at La Potinière, or the fabulous 5 star AA restaurant of Tom Kitchin, The Bonnie Badger, which uses locally sourced produce and serves artisan beers and wines from an impressive selection. The Glenkinchie Distillery (11 miles) offers some excellent whisky tasting and distillery tours.

The Restoration Yard and Wellbeing Lab sits within Dalkeith Country Park (20 miles) offering great shopping, homeware, food and drink, giftware and more. There is the Fort Douglas Adventure Park to keep children entertained with treehouses, zip wires, suspension bridges, slides and climbing walls. The Coffee Bar and The Kitchen restaurant offer tasty breakfasts, lunches or afternoon tea using fresh, local produce.

Hop on the train at Drem (10 miles from Papple) or Dunbar and a 25-minute journey will take you into the centre of Edinburgh where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak up the culture and heritage of this beautiful, vibrant city.
