A spacious townhouse in the heart of Alnwick, the Craftsman’s Cottage combines a dream location with distinctive interiors.

The medieval town of Alnwick is one of the most prized destinations in northern England, celebrated for its 11th-century castle, spectacular Alnwick Garden, atmospheric town, and proximity to delightful coastal and rural villages such as Alnmouth and Lesbury.

Set on the southern corner of Alnwick Garden, just a few yards from the legendary Barter Books second-hand book shop which is set in a former Victorian railway station, Craftsman’s Cottage places all of Alnwick’s key attractions within a 10 minute walk. Guests can stroll along the town’s cobbled streets, admire the Grand Cascade waterfall, visit the world-famous Poison Garden, and visit the magical play village of Lilidorei within the grounds of Alnwick Gardens and, of course, relive the magic of Harry Potter at Alnwick Castle. Hulne Park's stunning woodland trails across the Duke's land are also not to be missed.

Cottage is arguably something of a misnomer when it comes to the Craftsman’s Cottage, which comprises spacious living areas and four generous bedrooms. Stepping through the sunny yellow front door brings you into a light-filled hall with a large sitting room to your right, entered through double glass doors. Two windows, both with window seats, overlook the gentle bustle of Alnwick while a striking stone fireplace, beautiful antique furniture and a discrete television set an elegant yet relaxed tone.

Follow the hallway through to the dining area, which is set by full-height glass windows and a door that leads out onto a small patio. From here, you can head into the country kitchen, complete with lime-washed timber beams and a fabulous old brick fireplace containing a wood-burner, or towards a pretty ensuite bedroom, which benefits from direct access to the patio. Cleverly, the kitchen can be accessed from both the dining area and the sitting room, achieving a lovely sense of flow and convivial vibe throughout the ground floor.

Just outside the kitchen and dining area, a striking timber and black-painted steel spiral staircase curls upwards, ushering guests to the impressive master bedroom. Beneath whitewashed timber beams and illuminated by a double window with window seats, you’ll find a sumptuous antique bed, an inviting seating area and ensuite bathroom with shower. After a long day’s broomstick training at Alnwick Castle, when only a bath will do, there’s a family bathroom on this floor as well, in addition to a twin bedroom. A further double bedroom is located on this floor.

Wander the cobbled streets and gift shops around the marketplace, or stop-off at one of the many quaint cafes across the area, including the Strawberry Lounge for a lovely afternoon cream tea.

For provisions, you will find plenty of choice - try award-winning Turnbull’s for fine food and quality meats; The Alnwick Deli for delicious local produce, cheeses, hampers and gifts; or the Alnwick Bakery for home-baked bread, pies and pastries. There's a market every Saturday, a Farmers' Market on the last Friday of every month, and a number of large supermarkets nearby including a Marks & Spencers, and Sainsburys, as well as a handy Morrison's supermarket just across the road.

There are several eateries nearby that come highly recommended: Lilburn's bar-bistro, serving local, seasonal produce; Sherkhan, offering dine-in or meals to take away; Cafe Tirreno for authentic Italian dishes and warm hospitality, or alternatively Carlo's for classic fish and chips. For a dining experience with a difference, The Treehouse Restaurant nestled in the treetops of Alnwick Gardens offers cosy lunches and dinners in a magical setting (booking essential).

The Running Fox in Shilbottle (3.5 miles) has an artisan bakery and café not to be missed. Alternatively, head to the Cook & Barker Inn at Newton-on-the-Moor (6.5 miles) or the pretty fishing village of Craster (7.5 miles) to sample the legendary oak smoked kippers from L Robson & Sons. Finally for a sumptuous seafood treat, head to The Potted Lobster in Bamburgh - featured in the prestigious Michelin Guide in both 2018 and 2019.

The Little Things We Love

Having all the vibrant best of Alnwick within strolling distance yet being rewarded with blissful tranquillity once you close the cheery yellow front door.

Don't take our word for it...

We had a super week in Northumberland (my home county) and the Craftsman's Cottage is superb.
Ms Robertson, 1st April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We had an excellent week staying at Craftsman’s Cottage. There were 5 of us, and we all loved the cottage. It is beautifully restored, with bags of character. We were particularly impressed with the floors and all the woodwork. It was superbly situated within easy walk of castle, shops etc. We had thought that parking might be a problem but we had no trouble unloading outside, and parking nearby (free). We have barely scratched the surface of the attractions of Northumberland, and we hope to come back in June to see puffins. We highly recommend the Serenity boat trip to the Farne Islands.

Don't take our word for it...

We had a great stay at The Craftsman’s Cottage. The property was spotless clean and the owner was extremely helpful and easy to contact. I would stay in the cottage again.
Ms Wells, 1st April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We loved our stay at The Craftsman's Cottage. It was warm, welcoming, clean, cosy and full of character. The location is great and we enjoyed exploring from the doorstep. Only 10 minutes drive to the beautiful coastline at Alnmouth too. The kids have asked that we come back in the summer!
Tuck family, 1st April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

Just to say we have had a lovely week and undoubtedly one of the best holiday cottages we’ve stayed in. It’s in a great position and is beautifully fitted out with everything thoughtfully provided.

Don't take our word for it...

We have stayed at The Craftsman's Cottage before and loved it. It is cosy, beautifully designed and furnished and a great base for exploring Northumberland. The owner, is so friendly and lovely - we will come again!
