Turner Cottage
Situated in the idyllic village of Embleton, only a short stroll from the velvety white sands of Embleton Bay and Low-Newton by the Sea, Turner Cottage is the ideal base for a quiet coastal retreat.
Adjoining Calder Cottage, the property shares the same traditional exterior and boasts commanding sea views stretching across to the dramatic silhouette of Dunstanburgh Castle. Enter the cottage through a striking Klein blue front door, where a small entrance hallway welcomes you with earthy, wood-panelled walls and rustic textures.
The same thoughtful design continues throughout the single-level cottage. Balancing rich green wood panelling with a sumptuous blue velvet sofa and cheerful pops of reds and orange with the curtains, cushions and light fittings, the living room is a welcoming space with an exposed stone fireplace - above which hangs an eye-catching JMW Turner print. Inspiring the name Turner Cottage, plenty more Turner prints have been hung throughout this seaside bolthole in recognition of the artist’s extensive work in the area.
To one side of the fire sits a vintage Ercol armchair upholstered in playful print fabric by David Hicks, positioned next to a handcrafted wooden bench which adds a tasteful, artisanal touch. Above the bench, a vintage Moroccan cactus silk kilim showcases earthy hues and woven textures, perfectly complementing the room’s colour palette.
Set to the rear of the living room is an intimate dining nook with a cedar-top dining table – made from wood sourced from the nearby Hirsel Estate in Coldstream - and bespoke bench seating and linen upholstery. The perfect spot for sharing stories of the day’s adventures over a bottle of wine.
Next door lies the bright and contemporary kitchen with eye-catching sea green walls. White cabinetry paired with a sleek stainless-steel worktop gives the space a clean, pared-back feel whilst the distinctive cork flooring adds warmth and texture. Fully equipped with electric oven and induction hob, enjoy sweeping sea views through the window whilst cooking a delicious meal for two.
Beautifully styled, the king-size bedroom is a soothing retreat complete with exposed beams, more wood panelling and a soft, neutral colour palette of creams and warming yellows. A timeless wooden bed by Ercol takes centre stage accompanied by recycled bedside tables made by Foresso. Extending across the rear wall, a series of built-in wardrobes are cleverly concealed with superb storage. The room is layered with cosy textures, from a geometric, woven throw to richly patterned rugs underfoot.
With a pop of Barragan pink, the en suite is a playful contrast to the bedroom featuring a large walk-in rainforest shower.
Outside, a large garden is shared with neighbouring Calder Cottage which enjoys undisturbed coastal views down to Embleton Bay. Planted with a diverse range of grasses and small flowers and shrubs, the garden offers year-round interest.
A private glazed reading room, also known as the Huff House, is the perfect spot for lazy afternoons with a good book and enjoying the truly unique coastal vista. Or come nightfall, delight in the pristine night skies and immerse yourself in a spot of evening stargazing beneath some of the darkest skies in the country.
Turner Cottage is a lovely romantic escape for two, though if you’re looking to holiday together with another couple it’s ideal for a joint getaway when booked in conjunction with adjoining Calder Cottage.
