The Old Byre at West Moneylaws
A stylishly converted cow shed in a hard-to-beat rural location with private hot tub use.
Set in rolling Northumbrian countryside near Cornhill-on-Tweed, The Old Byre delivers the peace of a truly rural setting while also packing an interior design punch. Known as the first and last village in England, Cornhill sits on the border with Scotland where it follows the River Tweed, bordered by the Cheviot Hills to the south. This setting ensures that The Old Byre is remote enough to deliver a sense of blissful rural isolation while also being close enough to Cornhill to easily pick up provisions and enjoy a pint in the village shop and Collingwood Arms Hotel.
As the name suggests, this freshly converted property was once a byre, or cowshed, that formed part of the farm steading that sat on this prime spot of pastoral land. Together with its adjoining sister property, The Stables, The Old Byre has benefitted from an impressive transformation from a tumbledown stone outbuilding to a rustic-chic holiday cottage with a lust-worthy location.
The single-storey former shed now sports a smart granite roof and galvanised window and door frames set into the original stone walls. The large open-plan kitchen and living area, topped by timber trusses with an exposed stone wall at one end, forms the hub of the house and sets the rustic-cum-industrial chic design tone for the property. Flagstone floors, a wood burner, a smart matt grey country kitchen, contemporary artworks and a galvanised steel, timber and leather dining table and chairs make this a stylish yet welcoming country escape. And, to top it off, sliding doors lead from the living area to a raised platform with a secluded hot tub.
The Old Byre further features a utility room and two en-suite bedrooms, which combine rough-hewn stone walls and exposed timber trusses with homely throws and prints of Highland cattle and hares. One of the bedrooms features a king size bed while the other is set up with twin beds, which can be configured as a king size bed, and both bathrooms benefit from walk-in showers with tropical rainforest showerheads
Finally, guests staying at The Old Byre enjoy access to a separate games room (shared with guests of The Stables) with a pool table, football table and darts board. And, just a few hundred yards from the house, there’s a pretty pond teeming with ducks and wildlife.
Only slightly further afield, there’s walking and biking galore in the Cheviot Hills, fishing on the River Tweed, historic castles to visit at Norham, Ford and Etal, and the nearby Battlefield of Flodden to explore.
For larger groups who wish to holiday together, The Old Byre can be let in conjunction with The Stables, which adjoins the property and sits in the same ownership.
