Smailholm Tower
A Historic Inspiration for Sir Walter Scott
Perched on a rocky outcrop, Smailholm Tower offers a glimpse into the 15th-century life of the Scottish Borders. Built in the first half of the 15th century, this rectangular towerhouse is surrounded by a substantial stone barmkin wall and features stunning views from its battlements, including possible sights of Bamburgh Castle across the border in Northumberland.
Visitors can explore the well-preserved tower, complete with roof and floors, and view the remains of the outer hall and kitchen. Inside, a model of the tower and exhibits related to Sir Walter Scotts Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders reveal the connection between Scott and this evocative location. Although access involves a steep, uneven path, the site provides a captivating glimpse into the world that inspired one of Scotlands greatest literary figures.
