A Historic Landmark in the Scottish Borders

The Waterloo Monument, situated near Ancrum in the Scottish Borders, stands 150 feet tall and was constructed between 1817 and 1824 to honour the Battle of Waterloo. Designed by architect Archibald Elliot, this grand structure offers visitors a chance to delve into Scotland’s rich historical heritage. Although the tower itself isn’t open to the public, visitors can borrow a key from the Lothian Estates Office in nearby Bonjedward for a small fee. This allows access to the spiral staircase and a spectacular viewing platform, providing breathtaking views of the surrounding countryside and a unique perspective on Scotland’s commemorative architecture.
