Overview

A chic pied-à-terre for two in rural Northumberland.

Immerse yourself in the simple pleasures of Northumbrian country life without compromise on style or mod cons

Following small country lanes through the heart of rural Northumberland, you’ll discover a sensitively restored stone farm building nestled into a rugged landscape of undulating grazing fields criss-crossed by burns. The barn retains all its rustic charm and secluded setting but has been transformed from its humble farming origins into a trio of slick one-bedroom cottages, including the charming Romilly.

Viewing the barn from the front, you’ll see that Romilly claims two of the three original arched doorways that puncture the old stone walls, now fully glazed to allow light to flood into the open plan kitchen, dining and living space and bedroom. The former, decorated in soft grey with pops of lime green and bright pink, comprises a compact yet well-appointed kitchen and dining table for two, which leads into a cosy living area warmed by a wood burner. This in turn leads through bifold doors to a secluded patio with a bistro table from which to enjoy the sweeping views across the surrounding countryside.

Accessed from the kitchen, or directly through the arched doorway to the gravelled front patio, the spacious double bedroom with super king bed sports a subtle nautical theme and benefits from a slick en suite wet room. Being located entirely on the ground floor, Romilly is an ideal choice for guests seeking accessible, stair-free accommodation.

Should you wish for a little more space to spread out in, and accommodate an extra pair of guests, an ingenious hidden door leads from the sitting room through to the neighbouring one-bedroom apartment, Lucy.

Romilly is the ideal hideaway for enjoying blissfully romantic rural isolation, with endless countryside rambles and adventures awaiting discovery by slipping out of the back gate. However, for further exploration, the extensive walking and cycling trails of the Northumberland National Park (which is also celebrated for its exceptional stargazing) and the historic city, castle and gardens of Alnwick are both under half an hour’s drive away, with the white sands of Alnmouth beach just 10 minutes’ beyond Alnwick

Location

The small village of Glanton is set in the rolling foothills of the Cheviots, with the Northumberland National Park less than five miles west as the crow flies, the historic city of Alnwick nine miles to the east, and the Northumberland coastline just a few miles further east. Thanks to its perch on Glanton Hill, the village affords sweeping views across the Vale of Whittingham, framed by the Cheviots to the north, Simonside to the south and the Otterburn Moors to the west.

A short 15-minute drive will bring you into Alnwick where you will find an excellent range of amenities and an eclectic mix of charming specialist shops. Here you can wander the cobbled streets and gift shops around the marketplace, or stop-off at one of the many quaint cafes across the area, including Bari Tea based in the Castle Quarter for a very lovely lunch or a decadent afternoon cream tea! Sit by the fire in the old station waiting room of Barter Books in Alnwick reading one of their thousands of second-hand books.

With the stunning Northumbrian coastline under half an hour east of Glanton, you could be enjoying the bay at Alnmouth or the pristine golden sands at Warkworth, which stretch as far as the eye can see. The harbour at Amble which looks out to Coquet Island is popular for walkers and families and is home to fish shacks, seafood eateries and pastel-coloured beach huts.

Activities

To the west of Glanton is Ingram village and Breamish Valley where tumbling waterfalls, picturesque riverbanks and rolling hills make it the perfect place to hike, cycle or simply put down your picnic basket. This picturesque village is situated in the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park and has been designated as a Dark Sky Discovery Site. Take a walk in the Breamish Valley to the Linhope Spout Waterfall and stop for a picnic or to dip your toes in the crystal clear waters.

Alnwick is to the east of Glanton and offers a multitude of activities for you to enjoy during your stay. This magical market town offers a wide range of activities from dining in the twinkling treetops at The Alnwick Garden, flying a broomstick at Alnwick Castle or visiting one of the largest second hand bookstores in the country, Barter Books, which is housed within a Victorian Railway Station.

For the golfers in your party, you can enjoy the proximity of Alnwick Castle Golf Club, an 18 hole parkland course in the heart of Northumberland, or travel further afield to avail yourselves of the abundance of courses which hug the outstanding heritage coastline offering the true links experience. Courses such as Warkworth, Dunstanburgh and Bamburgh Castle Golf Club afford exceptional golf only surpassed by the stunning coastal views from the greens.

For something different, why not visit Chillingham Castle which is reportedly Britain’s most haunted historic castle. With idyllic grounds once designed by Capability Brown, the castle boasts commanding views of the surrounding countryside with local farmsteads and the scenic grandeur of the Cheviots. Wildlife abounds with deer, red squirrels and badgers in the woods to see and, if you are lucky, you may see the famous herd of Wild Cattle in the distance.

Nearby Rothbury, known locally as the Capital of Coquetdale, is an excellent base for the enthusiastic fisherman with the River Coquet running through the village and the surrounding areas. With runs of Salmon and Sea Trout the Coquet is a popular and appealing place to fish. Alternatively, a few miles west of Rothbury is Caiston Trout Fishery, a beautiful 50-acre fishing lake, spring fed and stocked with Rainbow, Blue and Wild Brown Trout.

Reviews

"We had an absolutely wonderful time at Romilly last week. The cottage is so lovely, well equipped and spotlessly clean. The location is perfect for exploring both the coast and the national park, but you can just as easily spend all your time at the cottage as it's so peaceful and set in lovely countryside scenery. The owner was a super host, really friendly and helpful too. Overall one of the best self catering holidays we have ever had and we can't wait to return one day."

Mr & Mrs Wheeldon

"We had a wonderful stay at Romilly, thank you. The directions and information for entry supplied by Crabtree & Crabtree we’re spot on. The property and amenities were exactly as described online, which meant we knew what to take and what to expect when we arrived. The property was fabulous. There is everything you need and could possibly wish for. The bed was possibly the most comfortable we have ever sampled, we particularly loved the size of it. The location was perfect, we are keen walkers and to be able to walk out of the door and straight into the hills was brilliant. The guest information book was incredibly helpful, we visited many of their recommendations. Thanks again for everything."

"Just wanted to let you know that we had a wonderful stay at Romilly. We hadn’t stayed at any Crabtree & Crabtree properties and didn’t know what to expect, so it was a lovely surprise to stay somewhere which proved to be hugely enjoyable. We know that these particular properties are new to your portfolio and I cannot praise them highly enough. Not only are they beautifully and yet conveniently situated, they are immaculate – absolutely spotlessly clean and so welcoming.  The hosts have done everything they could to provide a perfect environment for their guests.  I can’t think of one thing that we lacked to improve the quality of our experience and there were so many lovely touches; not least the welcome basket. We shall certainly stay with your company again and will be very tempted to re-visit one of the Four Sisters properties."
