Steps from the River Tweed and dramatic Dryburgh Abbey, this converted red-sandstone steading will suit walkers, history-lovers or anyone after rural quietude.

The freshly-renovated Dryburgh Steadings are four holiday homes set around an attractive courtyard, with the development attractively flanked by gardens and dry-stone walls. Featuring rustic exteriors of restored pink sandstone and pistachio-painted weatherboarding, their hamlet sits at the end of a no-through lane in a tranquil spot beside the River Tweed’s banks. Visible beyond are the three conical Eildon Hills.

Sleeping between four and six guests and containing two or three bathrooms, each Steading property shares the same high-end finishes and sleek contemporary design while possessing its own distinct charm and benefits. All enjoy access to a large, lawned communal area.

Steading Two sleeps four in two expansive en-suite bedrooms on its first floor, with an additional shower room found below. Entering the property through arched double doors in the courtyard, you’ll find a large, fire-warmed sitting room to your left. Double doors spill out from this inviting room into the enclosed, private garden via a patio with outdoor furniture and a gas barbeque. Turning right from the front door brings you an open-plan kitchen, dining and sitting area, which also boasts garden access.

You’ll enjoy quality kitchen equipment, luxurious bed linen and towels, indulgent waffle bathrobes, flatscreen televisions, and a generous welcome hamper of goodies. Dogs are very welcome, and an outdoor hose pipe helps to clean them after muddy walks.

Interrupting that rear garden’s low stone wall, a path leads down to both the river – look out for statuesque herons ready to pounce on fish – and the ancient Temple of Muses, a Greek-style structure dedicated to local, Rule, Britannia!-writing poet and playwright James Thomson.

Just below that Temple of the Muses begins the pretty, pedestrian-only Dryburgh Suspension Bridge – erected in 1872 to replace Britain’s first ever chain bridge. This safely transports walkers across the meandering Tweed towards the village of St. Boswells and its award-winning Mainstreet Trading Company’s bookshop-cum-cafe. Remain on the river’s east side and a five-minute stroll will take you up to ruined Dryburgh Abbey, the monumental resting place of Sir Walter Scott, while a colossal William Wallace statue looms over mature trees from a neighbouring hillside.

Other local highlights include baronial Dryburgh Abbey Hotel for evening drinks, picturesque Leaderfoot Viaduct, what remains of Trimontium – once the largest Roman fort north of Hadrian’s Wall – Scott’s eclectic home at Abbotsford and Scott’s View, one of the novelist’s most beloved look-outs. Eight miles away, the beguiling market town of Melrose has great shops and restaurants, and another of the four great Border abbeys.

The Little Things We Love

There are sofas in the kitchen so the cook of the party needn't miss out on the fun.

Don't take our word for it...

We just wanted to say that our stay at Steading Two was fantastic. The property is amazing - the best we've ever stayed in! Top quality in every respect. The owner has thought of everything and was so welcoming and told us to contact her if we needed anything. We'll be back!

Don't take our word for it...

Wow, what an amazing place – on arriving at Steading Two (4 adults & a daschund) we were warmly greeted by the owner who was the most amazing host, Shaun is also on hand for any day to day questions/places to visit etc, nothing was too much. On entering the property we were blown away at the total luxury that we were going to spend the next 7 nights enjoying. The attention to detail was just amazing, welcome pack on arrival and even a few dog treats were on hand. The property was beautiful inside and out, the only downside is that my wife is now expecting me to replicate everything now we are back at home. Outside there is a spacious garden, bbq and plenty of garden furniture so you can sit outside at gaze at the sun going down whilst enjoying a glass of wine from the welcome pack. It is such a great place we have already booked for the same time next year. On an additional note a special mention should go to Crabtree & Crabtree, their service was exceptional. From the moment we booked to the day we were leaving they were in contact to ensure everything ran smoothly which was totally reassuring. Everything they stated on the website regarding the property was 100% accurate. In summary brilliant service and I would recommend them every time.

Don't take our word for it...

We had a really good week at Dryburgh Steading Two, what a beautiful property. The standard of refurbishment is absolutely excellent, furniture bedding and soft furnishing are superb. Welcome Pack was fab - milk, cheese, cold meat, pasta, white wine and red meal. Plus a decanter of Sherry in both bedrooms!! The property manager was excellent with nothing being a bother to him.

Don't take our word for it...

I would like to start by saying what a fantastic holiday we had in the Scottish Borders our cottage in Drybrugh was wonderful and in a lovely setting and central for all our sightseeing . The cottage itself was immaculate and one of the best places I have stayed, everything you needed was provided and we were very grateful for the welcome pack, having arrived late in the evening . I will certainly use Crabtree again and recommend you to friends and family, your website is great and booking was so easy.

Don't take our word for it...

We had a lovely time and were extremely impressed with Dryburgh Steading Two. The property was immaculately clean, very spacious and comfortable and one of the best equipped properties we have ever stayed in. The setting of the building is lovely and we very much enjoyed the lovely views and the peace and quiet. We hope to return!

Don't take our word for it...

We have stayed at Dryburgh on at least five previous occasions but this is the first time that we have stayed in one of the Steadings. We have to say that Steading Two was very luxurious and has been furnished to the same high, luxurious standard as the farmhouses that we have stayed in previously. The views are magnificent, the Steading exceptionally comfortable, spacious and well equipped and spotlessly clean. The housekeeper could not have been any more welcoming and helpful and we will certainly be booking one of the properties at Dryburgh again as we do feel that we can go there with confidence that we are going to feel relaxed and that everything will be to our liking. The welcome pack is phenomenal and so generous that you could easily make a couple of meals with it and have a treat for “afters”.

Don't take our word for it...

Wonderful stay in a magical setting where everyone we met had time to stop and speak; a far cry from our normal life. Spent as much time overlooking the views from the steading as we did out and about as it was a comfortable and scenic place to relax. Surprisingly, didn’t mind neighbours and visitors. Wish I could spend another week here. Will definitely use C&C again and also recommend highly. Thank you for a great introduction to your company and this part of the world. Northumberland next! First class set-up, thanks again.
