Melrose Abbey
Scotland’s Majestic Medieval Ruin
Founded by David I in 1136, Melrose Abbey stands as a grand example of early Cistercian architecture. Originally built to assert both piety and power in the Scottish Borders, the abbey’s elaborate masonry and ornate sculptures reflect its historical significance. Although much of the abbey was destroyed in 1385, its surviving remains, particularly from the early 15th century, exhibit remarkable elegance.
The abbey grounds, including the cloister and the Commendator’s House Museum, are open to visitors. The museum displays medieval artefacts uncovered during excavations, and the abbey is also noted for its unique sculptures, such as the bagpipe-playing pig. Accessible routes around the site cater to visitors with mobility needs, offering insights into the abbeys storied past and its association with Robert the Bruce.
