Dryburgh Steading Three

Facing the Temple of the Muses, this converted sandstone steading offers families, history fans or nature-lovers a wonderful riverside base.

The freshly-renovated Dryburgh Steadings are four holiday homes set around an attractive courtyard, with the development attractively flanked by gardens and dry-stone walls. Featuring rustic exteriors of restored pink sandstone and pistachio-painted weatherboarding, their hamlet sits at the end of a no-through lane in a tranquil spot beside the River Tweed’s banks. Visible beyond are the three conical Eildon Hills.

Sleeping between four and six guests and containing two or three bathrooms, each Steading property shares the same high-end finishes and sleek contemporary design while possessing its own distinct charm and benefits. All enjoy access to a large, lawned communal area.

The largest property, Steading Three features three bedrooms and three bathrooms – with a ground-floor bedroom and adjacent shower room ideal for less mobile guests. From both its fire-warmed sitting-and-dining room and the kitchen, which boasts a further dining table, doors lead out to an enclosed garden whose sun-kissed patio and gas barbecue allows for outdoor meals.

While eating, relish unbroken views of the ancient Temple of Muses – a Greek-style structure dedicated to local, Rule, Britannia!-writing poet and playwright James Thomson. A path leads the few metres to it, before continuing on to the river where stately, statuesque herons wait to pounce on fish.

You’ll enjoy quality kitchen equipment, luxurious bed linen and towels, indulgent waffle bathrobes, flatscreen televisions and a generous welcome hamper of goodies. Dogs are very welcome, and an outdoor hose pipe helps to clean them after muddy walks.

Just below that Temple of the Muses begins the pretty, pedestrian-only Dryburgh Suspension Bridge – erected in 1872 to replace Britain’s first ever chain bridge. This safely transports walkers across the meandering Tweed towards the village of St. Boswells and its award-winning Mainstreet Trading Company’s bookshop-cum-cafe. Remain on the river’s east side and a five-minute stroll will take you up to ruined Dryburgh Abbey, the monumental resting place of Sir Walter Scott, while a colossal William Wallace statue looms over mature trees from a neighbouring hillside.

Other local highlights include baronial Dryburgh Abbey Hotel for evening drinks, picturesque Leaderfoot Viaduct, what remains of Trimontium – once the largest Roman fort north of Hadrian’s Wall – Scott’s eclectic home at Abbotsford and Scott’s View, one of the novelist’s most beloved look-outs. Eight miles away, the beguiling market town of Melrose has great shops and restaurants, and another of the four great Border abbeys.

The Little Things We Love

It's a joy to sit in the sunny garden and watch the abundance of wildlife and birds.

Don't take our word for it...

We had a fantastic stay at Dryburgh Steading Three, it was everything that was described and more, this was the second occasion that we have booked through Crabtree and Crabtree and I would highly recommend. It was a fantastic location and a beautiful well-appointed property with everything you could need to enjoy a peaceful holiday, we will hopefully return in the not too distant future.

Don't take our word for it...

Thank you for the excellent service from all of your staff. The Steadings are the best equipped cottages that we have ever stayed in, bar none. They have been finished to a remarkably high standard, and feel like home as soon as you arrive. The additional touches are remarkable, for example the welcome pack, dog treats, pharmaceuticals in the bathrooms, and masks. Sky TV is being installed, which is an extraordinary addition. The kitchen has every single piece of equipment that you could wish for including a Nutribullet, and the quality of the glasses stand out as the best in any house that we have stayed in. The setting is unparalleled, right next to the River Tweed, looking up to the statue of the Four Muses and looking across fields to the Eildon Hills. Simply gorgeous.

Don't take our word for it...

We have been very impressed indeed with the the very efficient service from Crabtree & Crabtree and with the quality of the properties to choose from. Dryburgh Steadings is an exceptional property, very well furnished and styled. The rooms are all great proportions and overall it feels very spacious and luxurious, with excellent outdoor space too. The finishing touches are second to none: fantastic welcome pack; dressing gowns; excellent toiletries, sewing kits & torches in bedrooms etc. The lounge is large, light and very comfortable more than enough space for a party of six and the kitchen is well equipped. The small courtyard development of steadings has been completed to a very high standard and no detail overlooked. And it is located in a beautiful rural location with great views. Definitely hope to return.

Don't take our word for it...

We had an excellent stay in Steading Three. Very well supplied with equipment; nothing missing that we could see. Very comfortable rooms. The test of any property hired out is whether we would go there again - we would.
