Retreat to mystical Holy Island, one of Britain’s most legendary locations.

Take friends or the family to this ground-floor home for a holiday with a difference. You’ll be based in one of the most famous locations in Great Britain, and on one of the cradles of early Christianity: the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, a tiny island located off the Northumberland coast.

Cradle or not, you’ll be wanting comfort, and Cottage Number Two provides that in spades. Inside, it contains an open-plan living space incorporating a long kitchen with inky dark navy cabinets, a four-person dining table circled by contemporary chairs, and a seating area whose chaise longue sofa and armchair face the wall-mounted Smart TV. With cream paintwork and richly hued furnishings, the interiors play with light and dark creating a modern, yet cosy atmosphere.

Doors behind that sofa lead to a lawned garden with a petite semi-circular patio surrounded by fragrant lavender. Here you can sit and take in the sun or share an outdoor meal. The garden is fully enclosed by high wooden fences making it a safe place for children – or dogs – to roam and explore.

Back inside, both bedrooms contain zip-and-link beds which can be configured as twins or a single super-king unit, both boast their own Smart TVs and en suite bathrooms. The first white-tiled bathroom contains a tub with a shower over; the second a commodious walk-in shower cubicle featuring a rainfall head.

Twice a day, for up to seven hours each time, Holy Island is cut off from mainland Northumberland when sea water submerges its sandy causeway. Yet that only adds to the magic of this two-square-mile speck, which has just 180 permanent residents.

Cottage Number Two is part of a row of stone buildings amid Lindisfarne village, where you’ll find one or two enticing cafes, pubs and shops. Close by is the ruined 11th-century Lindisfarne Priory, erected after Vikings attacked an original building where the likes of Saint Cuthbert were once based, and also the renovated castle, which hosts 1900s-style society rooms and is visible from miles away thanks to its position atop a small hill.

Holy Island is also home to the award-winning Gertrude Jekyll Garden and a pretty harbour whose characteristic upturned herring boats form sheds. Perhaps you’ll visit St Aidan’s Winery to sip some Lindisfarne Mead, long concocted from a secret recipe, or walk across to Hobthrush – a smaller tidal isle supposedly frequented by Cuthbert and now popular with seals.

While the priory and castle can swarm with tourists, other corners tend to be wonderfully deserted. Among them are some starkly beautiful white-sand beaches you can explore on foot or by horseback, and two obelisk-style lighthouses.

Shadowed by a pilgrim’s footpath, the causeway road is safe to cross long enough to easily enable drives to remarkable Bamburgh Castle or blustery Coast Path pub walks on days out – do keep an eye on the changing tides though to ensure you have ample time to return!

Location

The Holy Island of Lindisfarne is a fabled location which holds an iconic presence on the Northumberland coastline. Cut off from the mainland twice daily, residents enjoy a true a sense of seclusion and ability to explore the island's beaches and coves long after the majority of visitors have departed. Once home to medieval monks and victim to the first Viking raids on English shores, today it's known for it's fascinating historic sites, golden mead, and diverse birdlife.

In addition to the attractions of Lindisfarne Priory, the Gertrude Jekyll Garden, and Lindisfarne Castle, the island is home to a pretty harbour and several lovely cafés and pubs. For nature lovers, the white sandy beaches, often empty save for seabirds and seals, and the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve are an endless delight. The smaller St Cuthbert's Island, also known as Hobthrush, is accessible by foot at low tide and is another haven for wildlife observation.

Nearby, the coastal villages of Bamburgh and Seahouses are perfect for day trips spent immersed in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Further afield, Berwick-upon-Tweed provides more extensive amenities and rail links to Edinburgh and Newcastle, while venturing a further inland will take you to a huge network of walking trails through the Northumberland National Park and the Scottish Borders.

The Little Things We Love

The vast, star-filled skies visible at night, ripe for some memorable stargazing over a hot chocolate in the back garden.

Don't take our word for it...

The Cottage and garden were a dream. If we could live there forever?! We enjoyed our stay so much. If anything was needed we could contact the housekeeper, who looked after our needs admirably. A special thank you to her. I will be using Crabtree and Crabtree in the future. The whole thing was perfect. Including the beautiful seals calling in the evening.

Don't take our word for it...

Many thanks for giving us a lovely experience of Holy Island. Our cottage was in a perfect location & great to have parking space for two cars. Beautiful garden to sit in and the cottage decorated to a high standard with very comfortable beds. Thank you for the welcoming Prosecco, chocolates, flowers and milk. Very much appreciated. Meeting the owner on our final day made it very personable. Would love to return.

Don't take our word for it...

This property sits in the centre of the village yet still retains that feeling of peacefulness and tranquillity even when the tide is out and the tourists are in! And if we could only choose one thing to say about our stay, it would be that. Peace and tranquillity. The cottage garden is excellent and most mornings we sat on the patio with a cuppa and the morning paper, just taking it all in and enjoying the atmosphere. The Island itself is all we expected and more. I was still discovering new walks and adventures even after extending our stay for 2 nights. Izzy our dog loved it and made sure we were out early and back late.

Don't take our word for it...

It wasn’t easy saying good bye to Cottage Number 2. We had an absolutely wonderful stay. We were so impressed with everything in the cottage from the wonderfully comfortable beds to the pretty garden and furniture to the fragrant arrival flowers and unexpected chocolates to the extremely well equipped kitchen. You made our holiday very special. Thank you.
