Overview

A bijou stone cottage that’s a short hop from the golden expanse of Cheswick Sands.

Perfect for two, the Bothy is a charming bolthole by the beach

The Bothy is one of a small cluster of traditional Northumberland stone cottages overlooking the sand dunes that back the celebrated Cheswick Sands. It is the perfect spot for romantics to go for country walks, enjoy sunset strolls on the beach and relax by the wood burner.

Recognised as one of the finest beaches in northern England, Cheswick Sands is under ten minutes’ walk from the Bothy. With postcard-perfect golden sands stretching all the way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the celebrated beach offers hard-to-beat panoramic views and serves as a playground for families, dog walkers, kite-surfers and sand-yachters.

For active couples, a cobweb of footpaths stretch out from the front door, inviting hikers to explore the surrounding rural landscapes, while the 192-mile-long Coast & Castles Cycles route, just a short pedal from the Bothy, presents bikers with the opportunity to wind their way up and down this stretch of coastline.

After action-packed days exploring the beach and surrounding countryside, guests can rustle up a meal in the compact yet well-appointed kitchen, kick back by the timber-framed wood-burner in the cosy open-plan sitting and dining room and simply enjoy the peace, quiet and good company.

Activities

Cheswick beach (0.6 miles) is a wonderful spot for families, walkers and water sports enthusiasts with some amazing conditions for kite surfing and sand yachting when the wind starts to blow. This includes miles upon miles of vast golden sands which leads north to Cocklawburn, and south to Goswick and Holy Island.

Walking and cycling in this area is a delight with an abundance of trails and waymarked routes suitable for all ages and abilities from family routes, leisure routes, and mountain biking trails with everything from easy coastal stretches to high energy treks along the course of the Sandstone Way which sits right on the doorstep.

Sitting in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, nature lovers, birdwatchers and photographers will also be captivated by the vast variety of wildlife and birdlife right on the doorstep.

Nearby Holy Island is a hot spot for vast numbers of migrant bird species, including the chance to see the odd grey seal bobbing inquisitively in the sea or basking on the sand flats, while sightings of minke whales and white-beaked dolphins can also be spotted here in calm sea conditions.

The whole area is bursting with things to do, dotted by a trail of castles and fortifications interspersed with pretty seaside villages all the way up and down the coast. Head to Bamburgh where the dramatic outline of the castle is visible from miles around, or head to Craster to sample their legendary oak smoked kippers.

Visit the beautiful gardens at Howick Hall; or head inland to experience the medieval splendour of Alnwick Castle with its fantastic child-friendly activity programme inspired by the wizardly magic and broomstick antics of Harry Potter.

For country sports, 12,000 acres of shooting ground is available on nearby local Estates through a highly regarded shooting provider. This includes walked up shooting to high quality driven shooting pheasant and partridges. Duck shooting and roebuck stalking is also available. Walked up shooting from 3 guns onwards. Driven shooting from 120 to 300 birds a day. Catering and transport in field included. Fishing is available on the River Till and Lower Tweed, both just a twenty minute drive.

Reviews

"Thank you we have had a fabulous week.  The Bothy is just perfect and the location is ideal for us as we are big walkers. The flowers, chocolates and fizz were a lovely welcoming gift, thank you. We shall certainly be back and will most definitely book with Crabtree and Crabtree again."

Ms Gamble

"We were extremely impressed with the property. It is warm, cosy, beautifully furnished and perfect in every way. The location could not be better, with the beach within a five minute walk, dunes footpaths and the coastal walk all right outside the cottage door. There is an occasional car driving down to the beach, but other than that is is peaceful and relaxing. I have tried hard to think of a fault and can’t. Thank you for being such a first rate holiday booking company."

Ms Pennington

"We had a terrific time at The Bothy, and even the weather was good for most of the time. We already ‘knew’ the place from stays just up the road several years ago, but at that time the Bothy was still a ruin. It has been turned into a first class place for two, with pretty much everything provided for a successful stay. Overall a perfect stay – hope to use you again in the future."

Mr & Mrs Taylor

"We had a fantastic time away at The Bothy. The cottage and location were absolutely beautiful. It was spotlessly clean and was really well equipped. It also felt very homely and we soon settled into our new surroundings. All in all, we had a great time in Northumberland and would not hesitate in booking The Bothy once again, or another break with Crabtree and Crabtree."
