A bijou stone cottage that’s a short hop from the golden expanse of Cheswick Sands.

The Bothy is one of a small cluster of traditional Northumberland stone cottages overlooking the sand dunes that back the celebrated Cheswick Sands. It is the perfect spot for romantics to go for country walks, enjoy sunset strolls on the beach and relax by the wood burner.

Recognised as one of the finest beaches in northern England, Cheswick Sands is under ten minutes’ walk from the Bothy. With postcard-perfect golden sands stretching all the way to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, the celebrated beach offers hard-to-beat panoramic views and serves as a playground for families, dog walkers, kite-surfers and sand-yachters.

For active couples, a cobweb of footpaths stretch out from the front door, inviting hikers to explore the surrounding rural landscapes, while the 192-mile-long Coast & Castles Cycles route, just a short pedal from the Bothy, presents bikers with the opportunity to wind their way up and down this stretch of coastline.

After action-packed days exploring the beach and surrounding countryside, guests can rustle up a meal in the compact yet well-appointed kitchen, kick back by the timber-framed wood-burner in the cosy open-plan sitting and dining room and simply enjoy the peace, quiet and good company.

Location

At the most northerly tip of Northumberland lies Berwick-upon-Tweed. A walled town on the England-Scotland border with a turbulent past, it has been captured or sacked over a dozen times throughout history. Built to keep invading Scots from entering the town, a walk along these Elizabethan walls offers spectacular views across the River Tweed estuary and Berwick’s most famous landmark, The Royal Border Bridge. Fast trains between Edinburgh and London stop at Berwick-upon-Tweed, making it an ideal place for a coastal getaway without a car.

Artist L.S. Lowry was a huge fan of Berwick and there is a specially-curated Lowry Trail to explore, the town being home to a thriving arts and cultural scene. The area also has a rich food heritage and there is something to cater for all tastes and budgets, from fish and chips – best enjoyed on the promenade – to cosy pubs and cafés.

In addition to its fascinating history and Georgian architecture, the wider area boasts mile upon mile of fantastic beaches just made for lazy picnics and outdoor adventures. Spittal beach is popular with families, while the beautiful Cocklawburn, Goswick and Cheswick beaches all sit close by. The stunning sights at Bamburgh and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne are also both less than half an hour’s drive away.

The Little Things We Love

The Bothy’s eclectic blend of antique and mid-century furniture, fused together by vibrant textiles, creates a casual coastal vibe.

Don't take our word for it...

Beautiful peaceful and relaxing everything we wanted for our holiday fantastic location.
Mr Yates, 15th April 2025

Don't take our word for it...

Our favourite happy place in Northumberland, The Bothy is a home from home. The perfect location to enjoy Christmas, and every detail was taken care of. It was a lovely surprise to open the door to a Christmas tree and lots of festive touches, which made it all the more special. Our second time here in 2024, and we will definitely return in 2025.
Mr White, 8th January 2025

Don't take our word for it...

We felt at home straight away; the Bothy was warm and cosy and very well equipped with everything we needed. The added bonus was the wonderful treats left for us to enjoy. A short walk away was a glorious beach that felt like we had it all to ourselves. The bed was huge and so comfortable. A very powerful shower, too, over the bath. We really didn’t want to leave and hope to return soon.
Mrs Marshall, 29th November 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We spent a week at the start of September here in much sunshine (with breeze). It was perfect for a real change and very relaxing. Lovely walks on beach nearby. The cottage is well equipped and very peaceful. The room layout is ideal with great kitchen integrated with living room.
Ms Glass, 11th October 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We had a lovely stay at The Bothy. This well appointed cottage is very well located and a perfect base for touring the area. We have loved staying here and would recommend it to anyone.
Mr Dukes, 8th October 2024

Don't take our word for it...

The Bothy is comfortable, well equipped and ideally located for easy access to the wonderful Cheswick Sands Beech. The Northumberland coastal path runs close to the Bothy and affords ample opportunities for walking both south (to Holy Island) or north to Berwick and beyond. This is a quiet and relaxing location to unwind and enjoy what's around you.
Mr Bruce, 7th October 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We had a fantastic time away at The Bothy. The cottage and location were absolutely beautiful. It was spotlessly clean and was really well equipped. It also felt very homely and we soon settled into our new surroundings. All in all, we had a great time in Northumberland and would not hesitate in booking The Bothy once again, or another break with Crabtree and Crabtree.
Ms Stafford, 1st April 2024

Don't take our word for it...

We were extremely impressed with the property. It is warm, cosy, beautifully furnished and perfect in every way. The location could not be better, with the beach within a five minute walk, dunes footpaths and the coastal walk all right outside the cottage door. There is an occasional car driving down to the beach, but other than that is is peaceful and relaxing. I have tried hard to think of a fault and can’t. Thank you for being such a first rate holiday booking company.
