Rosemary Safari Tent
Just an hour’s drive from Edinburgh, Rosemary is a safari-style tent which provides a luxurious mode of indoor-outdoor living. Filled with considered touches, including a wood-fired hot tub on a private deck where you can spot constellations on dark starry nights, it’s as perfect for a romantic retreat as it is an energising getaway with family or friends. A log burner with an unlimited supply of wood, sheepskin throws, and plenty of heaters ensure the space is kept warm and cosy throughout the seasons, whether you escape to Rosemary to enjoy frosty winter mornings or the peach-skied dusks of summer.
Three steps lead up to the main deck and open-plan living area. The canvas can be rolled up to open the space out to the surrounding pasture, allowing you to revel in the fresh air and keep an eye out for passing wildlife. While there are no elephants or zebras to be spotted through your binoculars, you’re likely to see roe deer darting through the hedgerows, birds of prey soaring overhead, and skylarks hovering above the meadows.
A leather Chesterfield sofa and canvas chairs gather around the decorative gramophone, while the large wooden table with seating for six lies in the centre of the space, creating the perfect setting for an atmospheric dinner party. The kitchen also features breakfast bar seating, a large fridge, and a four-burner gas hob so you can prepare your meals with ease.
There are two bedrooms off the main living space, the first fitted with a four-poster double bed in a bespoke wooden frame, and the second complete with a double bed with a ladder leading up to a single bunk bed above. Next door, the bathroom includes a contemporary shower and heated towel rail. True to the slow-living ethos, there’s no Wi-Fi or TV available, however mobile reception and 4G are generally good so you can keep in touch with the outside world as much or as little as you’d like.
Outdoors, you’re free to explore the wider landscape which extends down to the river of Whiteadder Water and a Community Orchard, creating a dog-friendly route which is perfect for a dip and leg-stretch. Should the nearby Hayloft be available, you’ll have the option to book the wellness suite and sauna as well as yoga classes, massages, and guided meditations directly with the owner. You’re also welcome to rent stables and bring your horses along with you by separate arrangement with the owner, should you like to explore the trails on horseback.
Diverse wildlife thrives here, from short-eared owls and kingfishers to sparrowhawks and ospreys – as well as lots of pheasants and grouse, of course. Opportunities for water sports, wild swimming, and fishing are available at the nearby Whiteadder Reservoir, while a self-service cycle repair station at Longformacus Village Hall indicates how popular this area is for those exploring on two wheels – the Lammermuirs having been traversed in the Tour of Britain on several occasions.
The small village of Cranshaws is situated just four miles from the border with East Lothian, where the pretty village of Gifford is home to excellent shops and cafés, with the capital city of Edinburgh located about an hour’s drive away. There are countless trails for hiking, cycling, and horse riding in this area, including two long-distance paths that cross the beautiful Lammermuir Hills – the historic Southern Upland Way and the Herring Road which runs all the way to the coastal town of Dunbar.
With such an abundance of things to see and do both on your doorstep and in the South of Scotland at large, Rosemary is a unique and luxurious base for your Scottish escape. Browse available dates in the calendar and book your stay now.
