Dalgety
Tucked away on a quiet street in the Scottish market town of Peebles, Dalgety is a semi-detached Victorian house which has been in the owner’s family for over a century. Its rich history is reflected in the numerous thoughtful touches and beloved antiques which are dotted throughout the home, from a characterful Singer sewing machine to curling stones which once skidded across a frozen River Tweed. Elevated by colourful furnishings and contemporary artworks, the house has evolved into the perfect base for exploring both this thriving town and the South of Scotland at large.
On entering the house into the inner hall, you’ll be met with the beautiful central staircase with ornate spindles, plenty of space for storing boots and coats, and a door through to the living room on the right. With plush and vibrant sofas bathed in light through large windows, it’s the ideal place to relax – whether that’s with a morning coffee or an evening cocktail. The formal dining room lies to the left of the central hall, where a hearth crafted from locally quarried stone and a large wooden table create the perfect atmosphere for a dinner party. You’ll find the kitchen at the rear of the house with doors that lead out to the courtyard, in addition to the welcoming features of a large range cooker and coffee machine.
The first bedroom and contemporary bathroom are situated on the ground floor, with twin beds which can also be configured as a super king size bed. The further three bedrooms are all upstairs, each home to super king size beds which can also be configured as twins, as well as a family bathroom with a rainforest shower over a bath. Each room is decorated in individual colour palettes with warm woolen plaid throws and antique furniture.
Outside, you’ll find a courtyard to the rear of the house with atmospheric festoon lights illuminating a table and chairs and a charcoal barbecue. There is a lawn and herbaceous border to the front and side of the house, including a garage where you can store bikes, golf clubs, and outdoor gear.
There’s plenty to keep you occupied during your stay with the centre of Peebles just a 5-minute walk away, boasting a thriving town centre full of independent shops, cafes, pubs, and restaurants. Peebles Golf Club is also just around the corner, as well as the iconic River Tweed which is perfect for days spent fishing or enjoying long walks along its banks. The beauty of the Tweed Valley is on your doorstep, where Glentress Forest Park is a must-visit destination for mountain bikers, while the remarkable glasshouses and diverse woodland at Kailzie Gardens are sure to inspire green-fingered visitors. For day trips, there’s an abundance of sightseeing to do a little further afield, including the city of Edinburgh which is only a 40-minute drive away.
