Coldingham Sands: A Hidden Gem on the Scottish Borders Coast

Coldingham Sands, a sheltered sandy beach at the mouth of the Buskin Burn, is a picturesque spot on the Scottish Borders coast. This stunning beach stretches for a kilometre within Coldingham Bay, flanked by rocky shores at either end. Situated within the St Abbs and Eyemouth Voluntary Marine Reserve, the beach offers opportunities to observe hermit crabs in the rock pools and a variety of coastal wildlife. The surrounding paths provide excellent views and are ideal for leisurely walks. Coastal grasslands nearby support flowers like restharrow and butterflies such as the small copper.

Nearby attractions include the charming St Abbs village and harbour, as well as the St Abbs Head Nature Reserve, home to thousands of cliff-nesting birds. The beach, about 1 kilometre long and 200 metres wide, faces east, making it perfect for catching the early morning sunshine. Historic beach huts at the northern end and Homeli Knoll, a steep grassy hillock at the southern end, offer excellent vantage points along the coastline. The southernmost extremity of the bay features Yellow Craig, a striking 30-metre high cliff. Lifeguards patrol the beach at weekends in June and daily from 30th June to 8th September, ensuring a safe and enjoyable visit.
