Activities, Coastal, Countryside, Giveaway, Walking

This month we’re teaming up with our friends at Schöffel Country to offer a £500 voucher for a stay at any of our properties across the North of England or South of Scotland and £500 worth of brilliant Schöffel gear in which to really get out and explore our wild and rugged countryside.*

For us, these autumn months are all about spending time in nature, enjoying the change in season and soaking up the beautiful colours that surround us. But as we know, it’s not always wall-to-wall sunshine at this time of year, so a stylish yet practical outdoorsy wardrobe and a cosy bolthole in which to coorie are a must for any autumn staycation.

So, if you’re planning a get-together with friends and family or a sneaky solo escape, Crabtree & Crabtree and Schöffel Country have it covered. Think: misty mornings, crunchy leaves, crackling log fires and cosy fleeces.

Read on to get inspired by some of our favourite places to enjoy the great outdoors and for a chance to win, enter the competition on the Schöffel website via the button below.

A weekend walking in the Scottish Borders

The Borders is proper walking country, with brilliant routes such as The Southern Upland Way, Borders Abbeys Way and Pennine Way rewarding walkers with stunning views, fascinating historical landmarks, and a handful of bustling market towns with excellent coffee shops and local pubs.

We’ve many a dog-friendly property for those walking in this neck of the woods, kitted out with thoughtfully designed boot rooms, log burners, underfloor heating, cinema rooms, and cosy bedrooms in which to lay your head at the end of a long day. Our top picks would be Fairnilee House (sleeps 16), Coledale Stables (sleeps 8), and The Mill (sleeps 10).

If the Borders is your beat, you need a snug Schöffel Country outfit to fit the bill: For men, the Oakham Fleece Gilet layered with the Ptarmigan Ultralight Coat are sure to keep you warm in the elements, as are the Lydon Fleece Gilet and Edith Jacket for women which are ideal for long dog walks in all weathers.

Navigating the coastal paths of Northumberland

The Northumberland coast offers some of the best coastal walking in Europe. Its long sweeping beaches and two National Nature Reserves are home to some spectacular wildlife including puffins, seals, and dolphins. Some of our favourite strolls include Craster to Dunstanburgh, Beadnell to Bamburgh, and the Holy Island circular walk.

And when it comes to beachside boltholes, Neville Tower (sleeps 4) on the ramparts of the iconic Bamburgh Castle is one of our favourites. A little further up the coast, Cambridge House (sleeps 8) is a charming family home cut off from the mainland on the legendary Holy Island, while further south Tide’s Watch (sleeps 6) offers a chic contemporary take on a coastal stay at Beadnell Bay.

Favourite Schöffel Country number for a stroll by the sea? The Filey Fairisle Roll Neck Jumper, a beautifully soft, coastal-inspired knitwear piece crafted from a special seawool blend that uses oyster shells.

Enjoy exploring your own estate

If the idea of miles of parkland, woodland and wildflower meadows appeals, we’ve a host of beautiful, historic properties – from 16th Century castles and Edwardian mansions to Gothic gatehouses, gardener’s cottages, bothies and farmhouses – all set in extensive private grounds.

Guests at Head Gardener’s House (sleeps 4) at Floors Castle in the Scottish Borders are treated to fabulous walking within the park grounds and on the banks of the River Tweed, plus private use of the four acre Walled Garden outside formal opening hours.

Guests at Cheswick House Gate Lodge (sleeps 4) in Northumberland have 30 acres of secluded gardens to explore, plus one of the most beautiful hidden beaches in Northumberland just a mile’s walk away.

And finally, Papple Steading (sleeps 20) in East Lothian is the ideal choice for larger parties, offering exclusive use of six acres of lawns, paddock and woodland with a wildflower meadow dissected by Papana Water (a Site of Special Scientific Interest) and a further eighteen acres of ancient woodland.

Looking for smart staycation piece to match your country pad that will keep you warm and dry in all weathers? The new Carron Jacket is the perfect choice for men, while the women’s Wakerley Jacket is a stylish option engineered to perform in the outdoors.
