Overview

This converted barn is an ideal home for large family gatherings with exceptional interior space and generous enclosed gardens.

Between the Dales and Moors, a rural Yorkshire base close to walks, waterfalls, pubs and castles

Space abounds at East Lodge, a collection of handsomely converted rural barns in pretty Lower Wensleydale. Safe and secluded, this is a home that suits multigenerational family get-togethers just as well as large groups of friends.

Down a private drive within the sprawling Diamond Hill Farm, flanked by vintage Yorkshire scenery, this renovated complex is also arranged across a single storey and contains wet rooms – making it ideal, too, for anyone of limited mobility.

A series of connected spaces offer much room to socialise or spread out. That includes the country-style kitchen and its central breakfast bar, whose stools enable chit-chats whilst dinner is being prepared. In the open-plan living area, sofas surround the handmade brick fireplace and its log-burning stove as classic beams soar above solid oak floors in an adjoining dining area.

Neighbouring this is a bright, southerly-aspect conservatory that in turn leads to an enclosed courtyard featuring comfortable garden furniture. Back in the sitting room, expansive windows overlook a shrub-flanked lawn around which kids can gad about while parents perch on the terrace. Overlooked by no-one, this garden affords gorgeous views of the Hambleton Hills beyond rolling countryside.

Each bedroom has a large bed, or twin beds in one case. Two of the double rooms come with en-suite wet rooms; the remaining guests share an extra bathroom whose whirlpool bath is wonderfully soothing after days out.

As sunlight floods in, white walls emphasise the abundance of space throughout; on chillier days, however, geothermal underfloor heating and that wood-burner ensure everyone stays perfectly snug.

East Lodge is ideally positioned between the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors National Parks; with both easy to reach by car, that puts an abundance of walks and historical sites on your doorstep, as well as Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Force – waterfalls seen in the film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. There are also fine market towns such as castle-crowned Richmond, while the Forbidden Corner garden will enchant children and anglers, golfers and horse-riders are also in luck.

Within walking distance, meanwhile, is the community owned pub in Hunton. But you may not even get that far: amid the estate’s own 30 acres, lovely strolls through meadows lead to an idyllic woodland stream where  tufted ducks, water hens, curlews, rabbits and hares can be spotted.

Activities

East Lodge is a wonderful base from which to explore the rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales with the fine market town of Leyburn just six miles away making it ideal for exploring the eastern Dales. There are superb walks from the town, none lovelier than the stroll up to the summit of Leyburn Shawl, a long low ridge covered with pine woods, which gives extensive views along the Dale to Pen Hill and beyond. Keen walkers can continue to Preston-under-Scar, Redmire and Bolton Castle, one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles. Here you can enjoy a multitude of activities including navigating the castle maze, watching the falconry and archery displays or just enjoy a relaxing stroll around the lovely country gardens soaking up the superb views across the glorious Wensleydale valley.

Richmond is also a short 15-minute drive away and from here you can explore mile upon mile of sheep-dotted heather moorland and lush valleys punctuated by charming villages and market towns. The rolling hills and wandering dales of this celebrated living landscape include the two protected areas of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Historic sites are plentiful in the area with both Jervaulx Abbey and Middleham Castle within 15 minutes’ drive. Thorp Perrow is also worth a visit with a world-renowned arboretum, an adventure playground and wonderful Bird of Prey displays. Within half an hour and the younger members of your party could be experiencing Lightwater Valley, a fun-packed adventure park with numerous rides and attractions ranging from traditional funfair style carousels to exhilarating flying swings and a rollercoaster. Even closer is the quirky Forbidden Corner, a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers and follies set within a four-acre garden in the heart of Tupgill Park and the Yorkshire Dales which families will love. There is a barrage of tricky challenges which may include the occasional spray of water! You can spot pagan tree men, haybale dogs, gargoyles and even a huge pyramid made of translucent glass. This is definitely a day out with a genuine difference.

Golfers certainly won’t be disappointed with a challenging 18-hole course on the doorstep at Bedale Golf Club. Here at the Golfing Gateway to the Dales, the course winds through a former deer park, with wide, tree-lined fairways and offers long range views of the Wensleydale Hills. There is a gentler 9-holes available at nearby Masham Golf Course for those looking for a more relaxing round.

Finally, this wouldn’t be Yorkshire without a little flutter on the horses: spend a morning at Middleham Gallops watching racehorses being trained by one of several local yards, head to nearby Ripon, Catterick or Thirsk for an afternoon race meeting or glam up for a flat meeting at York's legendary racecourse all within an hour of East Lodge.

Reviews

Thanks so much for our glorious stay. It's such a fantastic space, and we were all able to spread out and relax. The hosts were helpful and responsive to our questions and provided a thoughtful welcome package upon our arrival. Couldn't have asked for more!

Mr Cooper

We booked East Lodge for a family “get together” and with an age range of 18 months to 71 years it was perfect for the occasion. Its extremely comfortable, open plan layout meant that we were able to find a quiet corner to read and still be part of the “action”. The cottage is extremely well equipped with the best quality kitchen utensils and has the highest standard of cleanliness that we have experienced in recent years in a holiday let. The property is perfectly situated to explore the Yorkshire Dales and Moors and the Yorkshire coast is not too far away. The owners, David and Joan are friendly, perfect hosts.
