Dating back to 1638, this storied inn once served as a resting point for funeral processions along the ancient corpse road to Grinton, where tales abound of mistaken identities and long-lost dogs returning from the borderlands of Scotland.
Beyond its rustic charm and scenic views—once named among England’s finest—the inn has also endured trials, most notably a devastating fire in 1929. With no local fire brigade to respond, villagers fought through the night to save what they could. The blaze gutted the original structure, but the resilience of the community preserved its place as a cherished landmark. Today, the Punch Bowl remains deeply rooted in the layered past of Swaledale, offering a glimpse into the life and legends of this remarkable corner of North Yorkshire.
