A Wildlife Haven and Maritime Legacy
Since 1918, Farne Island Boat Trips, operated by the Shiel family, have provided a gateway to the Farne Islands’ breathtaking wildlife and natural beauty. These islands, located off the Northumberland coast between Seahouses and Bamburgh Castle, are home to thousands of grey seals and diverse birdlife including puffins, terns, kittiwakes, and guillemots. Staple and Inner Farne islands, managed by the National Trust, offer exceptional wildlife experiences amidst stunning natural landscapes.
From April to July, witness one of the UK’s most vibrant seabird colonies, boasting up to 43,000 pairs of puffins against the rugged island backdrop. The islands are also a primary grey seal pupping site, with over 2,000 pups born annually during autumn and winter. Staple Island, open from May to July, offers a rugged, up-close encounter with puffins, ideal for adventurers and nature enthusiasts. Inner Farne, accessible from April to October via an easy-access boardwalk, features dive-bombing terns, a medieval chapel, and a Victorian lighthouse, blending historical charm with natural beauty.
