Cut off twice daily by the tides, Holy Island boasts a wealth of history with its castle, romantic ruined priory, and picturesque village. Lindisfarne Priory, one of Anglo-Saxon England’s most significant early Christian centres, remains a place of pilgrimage. Founded by St Aidan in AD 635, it became renowned through St Cuthbert, whose undecayed remains signified sanctity.
The island’s rich monastery was an easy target for Viking raiders from the late 8th century. In 875, monks fled with St Cuthbert’s remains, later enshrined in Durham Cathedral. The priory, re-established around 1150, features evocative ruins and the famous ‘rainbow arch’. Visitors can explore the priory’s history, Viking raids, and the beautiful Lindisfarne Gospels at the museum, now offering lively interpretations and refurbished displays.
