Cleveland Way National Trail
A Journey Through Moorland and Coast
Winding through the North York Moors and along the rugged coastline of North Yorkshire, the Cleveland Way National Trail offers a striking blend of landscapes, history, and heritage. Stretching 109 miles (175 km) from Helmsley to Filey, the route passes through windswept heather moorland before reaching the cliffs and coves of the North Sea.
From the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey and Helmsley Castle to the dramatic headlands of Whitby and Robin Hood’s Bay, the trail weaves through centuries of history. Whether tracing the footsteps of smugglers or admiring the ever-changing coastal views, walkers can take on the route in either direction. While some sections are demanding, the well-marked path is suited to those with a reasonable level of fitness. For a spectacular sight, visit in late summer when the heather is in full bloom.
