Jedburgh, a significant religious site for 300 years, saw the arrival of the Augustinians in 1138. While no buildings from the earlier period remain, various artefacts and archaeological discoveries shed light on life prior to the abbeys construction.
The visitor centre features remarkable early Christian artefacts, including intricately carved stone fragments like crosses and a sarcophagus from the 700s to 1000s. These relics, echoing Northumbrian styles, complement the abbey’s impressive mix of Romanesque and early Gothic architecture. Visitors can also explore the abbeys ancillary buildings and stroll through a recreated cloister garden, reflecting on the medieval monastic life.
