Now that it’s December and the countdown to Christmas is officially on, here at Crabtree & Crabtree things are looking decidedly festive. We’ve strung up strings of twinkling lights, have decorated the tree and have been excitedly swapping notes on the best festive fun that the North of England and the South of Scotland have to offer.
Perhaps it’s because Christmas last year was a somewhat subdued affair, or that we could all do with a little extra festive cheer after yet another extraordinary twelve months, but we feel like this festive season holds more promise than ever.
If you’re after a little Christmas magic, why not gather your family and bundle them up for a last-minute festive adventure. From enchanted woodland walks complete with flying angels to extravagantly decorated castles, festive train rides and brilliant light displays, there is something to thrill the whole family.
The Christmas Light Trail at The Alnwick Garden, Northumberland

There is nothing quite like Christmas lights to lift the festive spirits! Wrap up warm to admire beautiful Alnwick Garden lit up with spectacular festive projections, sparkling holograms and illuminated installations. Making up for the restrictions last year, the event will be bigger and better than ever before and will even include a special visit from Father Christmas.
Saints & Angels at Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland

If you, like us, think that Christmas is made better with decorations then Saints & Angels at Bamburgh Castle is a must! Created by world-class theatre designer, Charlotte Lloyd Webber and inspired by Bamburgh Castle’s three-thousand-year-old history, this immersive experience transforms the magnificent castle into a magical kingdom. Walk through the castle and marvel at bejewelled Christmas trees, towering floral arrangements and angels flying overhead before stepping outside to meet – and learn about - Father Christmas’ reindeer.
The Santa Experience at Archerfield Walled Garden, East Lothian

Nothing captures the magic of Christmas quite like a visit to see Father Christmas and his trusty elves hard at work in the Sorting Office. This very special event at Archerfield Walled Garden starts with Father Christmas recanting a theatrical festive tale – wrap up warm, this takes place in an outdoor barn – and ends in the charming wooden sorting office, where Father Christmas will give gifts to each child. Afterwards, nip into Archerfield's new Christmas shop to admire their cheery array of decorations, perhaps picking up as Christmas present or two en route.
Spectacle of Light at Dalkeith Country Park, East Lothian
4 December 2021 – 2 January 2022
Get your festive light fix with The Spectacle of Light at pretty Dalkeith County Park. If you have a head for heights admire the magical light display and spectacular views over the orangery from the treetops at Fort Douglas. Or, if you'd prefer to keep your feet firmly on the ground, explore the Colourful woodland walks and sparkling installations such as the Nutcracker garden with its flickering field of fire. Leave plenty of time to sip mulled wine or hot chocolate and toast marshmallows over the firepit.
Festive Enchanted Forest at Raby Castle, Yorkshire

For a festive event that entertains and delights your children in equal measure, head to Raby Castle and embark on its enchanted forest walk which doubles-up as a Christmassy scavenger hunt. The festive trail of twinkling lights will lead you to discover magical Christmas scenes containing hidden clues. Find all the clues you will be rewarded with a small gift. If you want to take the trail at a sedate pace, stop at the Stables Cafe for a warming cup of hot chocolate.
