A beautifully designed country cottage for two in the heart of the Yarrow Valley, surrounded by red squirrels, ancient trees, and babbling burns.

Hidden away amidst the leafy lanes and ancient woodlands of the Yarrow Valley, The Scullery is a pocket of truly special interior design in the Scottish Borders. Combining luxurious furnishings with eco-conscious touches and a deeply restorative rural location, it’s the ideal cottage for a romantic getaway or solo retreat to the countryside. Wildlife thrives here, from the red squirrels which hurry across the branches of Scots pine trees to the roe deer which forage along the hedgerows. In your own pretty courtyard garden, the sound of the gently flowing water of Ladhope Burn joins the birdsong to create an idyllic spot to rest and reconnect.

The interiors of The Scullery only elevate the sense of unrestrained beauty to be enjoyed in the surrounding landscape. Dating in its present state to 1850, when it was rebuilt by the 5th Duke of Buccleuch and 7th Duke of Queensberry, it has since been renewed with careful attention to every detail.

Open the gate and wend your way through the garden, complete with a table and chairs overlooking the water, before entering the cottage through the stable door into the pantry kitchen. Exposed stone walls are complemented by granite worktops and timeless fittings, such as the deVOL Aged Brass Ionian tap, as well as a high-spec induction hob and a Grind coffee machine for making a delicious espresso. Should you like to have the kitchen stocked up ahead of your arrival, the owner offers a personalised shopping service upon request and can arrange this for you – just contact our friendly team after making your booking.

The bathroom also lies on the ground floor and is fitted with a spacious walk-in rainforest shower. With forest-green tiles, plaster-pink walls, and underfloor heating, it’s both calming and thoughtfully styled. Upstairs, the cosy living room features a burnt-orange velvet sofa, round table and chairs, and views out to the garden. Streaming services, including Netflix, are available on the TV and the full-fibre Wi-Fi will keep you well connected. Alternatively, embrace the slower pace of country living and settle in with a good book or boardgame in the evening.

When sleep is calling, the inviting bedroom can be found next door. An artisanal wool mattress is set upon a Victorian-style green bedstead and topped with luxurious bed linen and scatter cushions. Sumptuous and yet softly in keeping with the pretty cottage setting, it’s perfect for undisturbed nights and long lie-ins.

For some fresh air and exercise, there are countless walking trails to be enjoyed from your doorstep. St Mary’s Loch – the largest natural loch in the Scottish Borders – is just six miles away and is excellent for walking, cycling, and fishing, while the dramatic ruined Abbeys of the Borders and the Southern Upland Way are also within easy reach. The owners are on hand in the adjoining farmhouse should you require any assistance, but do rest assured that guest privacy is paramount, so you can look forward to enjoying the peace and quiet of The Scullery to its fullest.
