An elegant and dog-friendly escape for two in the grounds of Netherwitton Hall, a historic country house in the heart of Northumberland.

With a history stretching all the way back to 1405, Grade I listed Netherwitton Hall was built in 1695 and has remained in the same family ever since. Located in the heart of the county between the Northumberland National Park and the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Grooms Cottage, a sophisticated hideaway in the grounds of the Hall, invites guests to enjoy the finest elements of this remarkable region. Look forward to days spent exploring the area or simply setting out on peaceful walks within the wider grounds of the Estate, keeping an eye out for the resident red squirrels as they dart amongst the mature trees.

Grooms Cottage is the central property in a row of three, overlooking the garden to the rear of the Hall. Enter through the front door into an inner hall with space for hanging coats and storing boots. A door leads through to the open-plan living space where a calming colour palette is complemented by patterned textiles and historic maps of the estate which hang on the walls. Original sash windows bathe the room in sunlight while the furnishings around the coffee table create the perfect space to relax. The spacious kitchen boasts quartz worktops and duck egg-blue cabinets, whilst a round dining table accompanied by four spindle chairs lies in its own bright nook with views out to the garden.

The shower room is also located on the ground floor, decorated from floor to ceiling with patterned tiles and with a large walk-in rainforest shower. A staircase in the inner hall leads up to the bedroom, where a king size bed sits under a high ceiling, with tongue and groove walls and a romantic window seat which looks out across the garden. Of particular note is the bath, which is tucked into a recess in the bedroom, lined with pink tiles and set beneath a skylight so you can enjoy a soak as you watch the stars overhead.

Netherwitton and Longwitton Estates which surrounds the cottage comprises 5,200 acres, including 1,000 acres of forestry. The Estate is firmly focused upon responsible, sustainable stewardship and conservation and it has a variety of environmental schemes in place, including a Countryside Stewardship scheme which promotes red squirrel conservation and habitat development – rewarded by the population of red squirrels which now flourishes in all areas of the Estate. While the Hall itself and the Walled Garden are private to the owners, guests are more than welcome to explore the wider Estate and are provided with maps of recommended walking routes.

There’s also plenty to keep you occupied further afield, whether that’s visiting the nearby National Trust properties of Wallington and Cragside, or the historic sites of Hadrian’s Wall, Bamburgh Castle and the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, all of which are under an hour’s drive away. Walkers can look forward to exploring the unspoilt Simonside Hills and Cheviots, or hiking along St Oswald’s Way or the Northumberland Coast Path.

ADDITIONAL ACCOMMODATION

For guests looking to holiday together but enjoy their own space, Hall Cottage (sleeping 3) next door can be let in conjunction with Grooms Cottage.

Location

Located in the heart of Northumberland, the area surrounding Netherwitton features several historic sites, walks and traditional market towns. Nearby Rothbury, located on the meandering River Coquet, is built from mellow sandstone and home to a vibrant high street with a variety of independent shops, including a good delicatessen, butcher and baker. Nearby Morpeth also has a wide variety of shops, cafés and restaurants and is an excellent gateway to the region, lying on the fast train line between London and Edinburgh.

History enthusiasts will find plenty to keep them occupied in the area. Wallington Hall, which was given to the National Trust by Sir Walter Trevelyan in 1942, is closely connected with Netherwitton Hall. Margaret Thornton of Netherwitton married Walter Trevelyan of Wallington in 1772 and Trevelyans continue to live at Netherwitton. A further jewel of this part of Northumberland is the National Trust property of Cragside, the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. This marvel of the Victorian Gothic Revival, surrounded by beautiful gardens and mature trees, showcases the innovative spirit of Lord Armstrong and is a perfect spot for a day trip.

The landscape is also sure to delight wildlife-spotters and walkers. The Simonside Hills, the Cheviot Hills, the Northumberland National Park, Kielder Water and Hadrian’s Wall are all within easy reach, providing ample opportunities for hiking and cycling. If you’d like to experience some sea air, the historic fishing villages and wide sandy beaches of the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, including Alnmouth, Craster, Warkworth and Bamburgh are also an easy drive away.

The Little Things We Love

Sitting on the bench at the front of the cottage with a cup of tea when the sun's shining.

Don't take our word for it...

The cottage has been renovated absolutely beautifully. It was such a relaxing stay, I really didn't want to go out and explore the area some days and just wanted to stay in and read, eat chocolate, drink tea and enjoy the interiors! The owners made us so welcome, superb welcome basket awaited us, huge sourdough loaf left on the side for us etc. We absolutely loved the place and will definitely return - do we get squatter's rights after a week?!!! Many thanks for a wonderful holiday. Booking the holiday was extremely easy and when I made a couple of enquiries over the phone, satff were extremely helpful.
Mrs Clark, 13th September 2025

Don't take our word for it...

Grooms Cottage is beautifully restored, decorated, furnished and equipped, in an unspoiled countryside location. Spotlessly clean. As well as milk, butter, eggs, bread, etc. and delicious home-made jam being provided, there was a warm welcome from the owners who live in the Hall. At night the area seemed totally silent apart from the very occasional car passing. One of the best holiday cottages in which we have stayed.

Don't take our word for it...

Fantastic cottage with that feel of luxury. Comfortable and perfectly furnished with all we needed. The area was amazing so picturesque and fabulous to be only half an hour from the beach.
Mrs Wardle, 1st August 2025

Don't take our word for it...

As a couple, we wanted a comfortable, slightly remote accommodation to enjoy the peace & quiet. We have a small dog, so the many walks from the location were great. As was the history surrounding us. Loved it all so much. I appreciated just how much effort went into creating this experience. Would we return again to discover more, yes.
