A Historic Northern Palace

Home to the original ‘Kings of the North’, the Prince Bishops of Durham, since the 12th century, the Auckland Palace is a fascinating example of Gothic architecture. The Palace reopened to the public in 2019 after extensive conservation work and offers a unique insight into the history of England and the interconnection between Church and Crown. Of particular note is St Peter’s Chapel, one of the largest private chapels in Europe, which boasts beautiful stained-glass windows and a stunning ceiling adorned with heraldic shields.

Things to See & Do During Your Stay

The Spanish Gallery is the UK’s first gallery dedicated to the art and culture of the Spanish Golden Age, sure to fascinate devotees of fine art and history alike, while the Mining Art Gallery and Faith Museum offer unique perspectives on the past through themes that are particularly pertinent to the region. For families, the Weardale Railway, Deer Park, and a busy calendar of events from young archaeologist clubs to painting workshops are perfect for keeping little ones busy. The Estate is also home to three excellent restaurants, with something sure to tempt everyone.

Staying at the Auckland Palace Estate

Three of our holiday cottages on the Auckland Palace Estate are situated in the quiet marketplace beside the grand gates which lead into the grounds, with Bishop Trevor Cottage enjoying wonderful views across the Walled Garden. A little further into town, The Clarence is a spacious Edwardian house which is perfect for group gatherings. All guests benefit from a complimentary Unlimited Pass to the estate’s attractions, a 10% discount in The Auckland Project’s restaurants and the Auckland Tower Shop, and after-hours access to the Walled Garden until 10pm. Please note that the attractions are closed from New Year until February Half Term, although the Deer Park will remain open.

Activities in County Durham

In addition to all the attractions of the Auckland Palace Estate, there’s an abundance of brilliant walking trails and unspoilt landscapes to be discovered in the Durham Dales of Weardale and Teesdale and in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Families and history lovers will also have Beamish, the Living Museum of the North, Raby Castle, and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham’s castle and cathedral within easy reach, all of which are perfect for day trips.
