Overview

A design-led contemporary apartment with a distinct surf vibe and magnificent views over Coldingham Bay.

Watch the incredible waves for which Coldingham bay is famed from your private balcony

Dotted with beach huts and ringed with wildlife-rich dunes and grassland, the horseshoe-shaped Coldingham Bay is one of the most picturesque beaches in southern Scotland. Only a smattering of homes pepper the grassy slopes above the kilometre-long white sand beach, amongst them the pair of strikingly contemporary Bay Villas.

With sweeping views over the bay and ocean beyond it, the Villas are set back far enough from the water’s edge to allow you to take in the dramatic coastline while being near enough to go for an early morning swim and stroll on the sand.

One of several apartments which make up the new design-led Villas, 2 The Bay is a first-floor home with a balcony overlooking Coldingham Bay and the sea beyond it. The owners have a keen eye for design classics reflected in the interior details including Eames hooks, Tylko shelving and Crittall shower screens. The interior styling reflects the entire family’s passion for the sea and surfing with splashes of blues and aquas throughout the apartment and a collection of surfing artwork, in particular the bespoke neon piece in the master bedroom which perfectly encapsulates the holiday spirit.

While you’re not soaking up the views of Coldingham Bay from the balcony, you can head down to the sand itself to enjoy excellent surfing, diving and kayaking - professional instruction in all three pursuits is available through the nearby St Vedas Surf Shop. There are also plenty of walking routes in the local vicinity, including a scenic coastal walk that takes in the pretty fishing village of St. Abbs, the perfect spot for a tasty seafood chowder or crab baguette. Should you fancy a day trip, choices include the historic coastal town of Berwick-upon-Tweed and vibrant City of Edinburgh.

Location

There are two lively pubs in the village of Coldingham (1 mile) along with a restaurant and fish and chip shop, as well as a Spar shop for convenience shopping. The Luckenbooth coffee shop sits nearby, alongside the Coldingham Priory Church where you can explore 700 years of fascinating history.

Nearby Northfield Farm is a National Trust for Scotland Nature Centre, perfect for a coffee or lunch stop, or head to the harbour at St. Abbs, where you'll find a cafe and art gallery serving delicious crab sandwiches and some divine tasty bites!

Eyemouth (3 miles) has a good selection of local services, while a more extensive range of supermarkets and retail facilities can be found in Berwick-upon-Tweed (14 miles).

Activities

The sheltered sands of Coldingham Bay sit just a few minutes’ walk from the apartment. It has a lifeguard on duty through the summer season, and a rocky shore at either end provides an ideal spot for dabbling in the rock-pools. The area is much favoured by families and offers lovely golden sands just right for beach-cricket, volleyball or flying kites.

Surfing and bodyboarding is popular here and the St. Vedas Surf School can provide rental and instruction. The area has a beach café, toilet facilities and a lovely family-friendly walk over the headland to the pretty fishing village of St. Abbs. Here, you’ll see thousands of seabirds and seals on this stunning stretch of marine reserve coastline. Diving charters leave the harbour here every day, offering some of the best diving in the UK.

Nearby Eyemouth (4 miles) has been a fishing port since the 13th Century. Today, as well as being home to a fishing fleet of about 80 boats, the harbour is also the base for a diving school, boat trips around the coast and exhilarating rides in a high-powered RIB.

To learn a little about Eyemouth’s history, pay a visit to Gunsgreen House on the opposite side of Eyemouth harbour. Built in 1753, today it offers the chance to learn more about the life of ‘merchant’ John Nisbet through its interactive tours of the house, museum and cellars. Children can dress up as a smuggler, explore hidden tunnels, hide in barrels and discover the famous ‘tea chute’!

For golf fans, Eyemouth’s golf club boasts a sixth hole voted as ‘Britain’s most extraordinary golf hole’ (check it out!) and there are a number of other highly regarded courses nearby, including links courses at North Berwick, Goswick, Dunbar and Gullane. Fishing can be found at nearby Westloch Farm.

To the south, the tiny, picturesque island of Lindisfarne linked at low tide to the mainland, is an overwhelmingly mystical place, home to the evocative remains of a ruined eleventh-century priory, a beautifully restored castle and the infamous Lindisfarne Mead.

To the north, head to Foxlake Adventures in Dunbar for some watery excitement with its wakeboard park and ringo rides, while wildlife enthusiasts and photographers will love the Scottish Seabird Centre and John Muir Country Park. Finally, the magnificent City of Edinburgh is a very easy day trip either an hour by car or 45 minutes by train from nearby Berwick-upon-Tweed.
