Step inside and the look is quintessentially country with evocative wallpapers such as the 'Tree and Cow', and 'Pigeon and Clocktower' by illustrator Edward Bawden, stunningly reproduced by printmaker St. Jude’s as part of their studio archive range. The overall look is a modern twist on the arts and crafts movement balanced beautifully against the simplicity of furnishings with exceptional styling and design at its core - the Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson bookcase a wonderful example.
A bright inner hall with desk is a perfect spot when work beckons, leading into an open plan country kitchen which exudes a welcome calm with dining area in sunshine yellow and the craftsmanship showing through the mellow oak finishes. This leads into a ground floor boot room and cloakroom, leading out to a courtyard and a separate games room with ping pong table.
Upstairs are two atmospheric bedrooms divided by a family bathroom, layering textures and a rich heritage colour palette which say peace and tranquility.

Dogs
Fountainhall is a working and shooting estate with breeding pens therefore dogs cannot be considered from mid August to the end of January each year.
Outwith this period, one well behaved dog will be considered strictly by arrangement at a charge of £30, kept to the ground floor of the property only.

The Grieve's House sits in a private spot at the end of a steading surrounded by farmland. The property is not overlooked. The immediate area is a working stable and greenhouse which will be in occasional use.

Location
The Grieves House sits in the centre of Fountainhall Estate with lovely quiet walks to nearby Glenkinchie Distillery and the village of Pencaitland which are both 1.5 miles from the property.
The small village of Pencaitland has a small Spar store for everyday essentials, a small pub called the Winton Arms, a post office and a petrol station. The Glenkinchie Distillery offers some excellent whisky tasting and distillery tours. East Coast Organics also sits nearby who can deliver a delicious box of fresh organic produce direct from the farm for the start of your stay.
Extensive shopping and amenities can be found in Haddington (7 miles) where you will find an excellent selection of grocers, wine shops, florists and butchers sitting alongside charming gift, clothes shops and craft galleries. Here, you can relax and watch the world go by in one of the many cafes, delicatessens or tea rooms in the town including The Loft for fabulous artisan breads and oven-fresh produce. The Waterside Bistro is very good, as is the Cottage Garden Kitchen which is very special. Booking essential. Look out for The Big Blu mobile van with its own wood-fired oven for delicious authentic pizza.
The Restoration Yard Store and Café in the heart of Dalkeith Country Park (8 miles) is also a top spot for a relaxed lunch and a spot of retail therapy, while children can enjoy some devilish exploits in the Fort Douglas Adventure Park.
For more elegant dining, head to La Potinière at Gullane (13 miles) for delicious seafood and award-winning cuisine or Tom Kitchin's restaurant 'The Bonnie Badger' which is a fabulous 5 star AA restaurant using locally sourced produce washed down with artisan beers and wines from an impressive selection.
Hop on the train from Prestonpans (8 miles) and a 15 minute journey will take you into the centre of Edinburgh where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak-up the culture and heritage of this beautiful vibrant city.
Activities
For cycling you can join Sustrans 76 which runs all the way down the coast to Berwick upon Tweed or you can enjoy some leisurely cycling circuits along traffic free paths and minor roads, taking time to explore the quaint coastal villages of the area. Bikes can be hired from in Law Cycles North Berwick or Belhaven Bikes in Dunbar, while FatBike Tours in North Berwick run lessons and guided treks on specially designed ‘fatbikes’ which are a fantastic way to explore the remote sandy bays and ancient clifftop castles of the area on two wheels.
The John Muir Country Park covers some of the most spectacular East Lothian coastline, featuring expansive sandy beaches which are a haven for wildlife and birdlife. Favourite spots include the glorious family friendly beach at Gullane; the dune-fringed sands at Belhaven; the dog friendly cove at Yellowcraig; or the secluded sands at Seacliff - an enchanting gem with a tiny harbour and wonderful views north towards the Bass Rock and Tantallon Castle.
Also take time to visit The Scottish Seabird Centre where you can watch the rich marine-life and birdlife of the area using powerful webcams and telescopes, including some curious seals and dolphins if you are particularly lucky.
For watersports, there is canoeing inland on the River Tyne and Esk; superb kayaking around the waterways off Dunbar; and thrilling wakeboarding and ringo rides at Foxlake. Surf buffs can enjoy some enjoy some wonderful sport right along the coast and there is a surf school in Dunbar offering lessons in paddleboarding, surfing and coasteering. There are also dive charters and sightseeing trips from the harbours at Dunbar and North Berwick taking in nature reserve sites around the Forth, Bass Rock and Isle of May.
For golf, the area is world-famous for its stunning links courses with Muirfield, Luffness, Gullane and North Berwick all within easy reach offering some fantastic sport for the golfing members of your party.
Take a visit to the magnificent city of Edinburgh (14 miles) where you can explore the fascinating architecture of the old town and soak-up the culture and heritage of this beautiful vibrant city. Wander the cobbled closes and narrow stairwells of the Royal Mile and Grassmarket; take a candle-lit tour of the underground vaults of the old city for some fascinating tales of Edinburgh’s darker past; or perhaps partake in a wee dram or a tasting session at the Scotch Whisky Centre where you can learn to nose, swirl and taste like an expert.
Finally a visit to iconic Edinburgh Castle which sits majestically over the city and houses the Crown Jewels of Scotland, the Stone of Destiny, 15th Century gun Mons Meg, and the National War Museum of Scotland. And if you’re lucky enough to be in the city in July and August, don’t miss the vibrant Fringe Festival, exceptional Jazz and Blues Festival or the Edinburgh Military Tattoo ending with a poignant lone piper lament high on the castle ramparts. Truly spectacular!

“Grieves House was our first family getaway in years for various reasons and it was everything we were looking for individually and collectively. This cosy home is incredibly clean and practical, the kids loved the games room and there were plenty of beautiful outdoor spots for strumming the guitar. We all loved cuddling up in the front room watching movies every evening together, playing board games/building jigsaws in the lovely kitchen or soaking up the sun with a coffee at the picnic table. The location is perfect for the area as it’s between the beach (North Berwick and Coldingham were our favourite), fantastic museums, delicious ice-cream and the city. I would highly recommend this to anyone who needs a real breakaway."
