Overview

Set on a working farm, the Granary delivers an authentic pastoral experience albeit with reassuringly modern comforts

A taste of rural Northumberland life with plenty of pursuits for garden lovers and outdoor enthusiasts

The owners of The Granary are the real agricultural deal, building up an award-winning organic farm spanning 1,650 acres of rolling land. This now includes the renovation of the old stone Granary that sits on their steading near the market town of Rothbury, creating a delightful two-bedroom cottage for those eager to get a taste of the pastoral life.

Thanks to its setting on a bustling farm, the Granary delivers authentic bucolic charm in spades – the owners will even introduce budding farmers to the ins and outs of organic farming on request. Meanwhile, guests content to simply enjoy the sense of rural charm can snuggle up in front of the wood-burning stove or sink into the bubbling hot tub and watch the four-legged Rothley residents grazing the surrounding pastures.

The Granary features a contemporary open-plan ground floor layout, encompassing a spacious, well-equipped kitchen with Neff appliances and dining area, complete with space for up to eight guests, and a comfortable living area with a large corner sofa which converts to a full size sofa bed for families or slightly larger parties.

A pair of French doors flank the wood-burner in the living area, leading out onto a south-facing patio and enclosed garden. Every convenience has been thought of, from a dedicated wine cooler in the kitchen to a handy boot and utility room accessed via the back door. There’s even a ground floor shower room in which to rinse off after a soak in the hot tub, sufficiently screened and raised to afford sweeping country views.

Two tranquil, good-sized bedrooms are set in the Granary’s pitched roof. Both feature smart en-suite bathrooms and one can be configured as a double or twin room. The master bedroom adds a delightful little rooftop balcony - the perfect spot from which to observe the early morning farm action with a cup of coffee.

Guests staying at the Granary mustn’t miss the opportunity to stroll down to Rothley Low Lake, which forms part of the wider farm estate. Designed and landscaped by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown in the late 18th century, the trademark serpentine lake and organic landscaping is one of few examples of his work in the North East. Garden lovers will also want to visit the beautiful Wallington and Cragside National Trust properties, which are just a short drive from the Granary, while a range of independent shops, restaurants and pubs can be found in the charming market town of Rothbury.

Location

Situated approximately 22 miles northwest of Newcastle, The Granary at Rothley East Shield is wonderfully located to explore Northumberland’s beautiful National Park, coastline and everything in between.

The local village of Scots’ Gap (2.8 miles) has a newsagent, small grocers, and a fuel station. If you carry on further south to Kirkharle (8 miles), there’s the lovely Kirkharle Courtyard, which houses a number of independently owned craft units, as well as a farm shop and coffee house.

The attractive town of Rothbury is 10 miles away and is home to several independent shops, pubs, cafés, and restaurants for both daytime and night-time eating. It has an excellent butcher shop opposite the T-junction as you drive in, or head to Tulley Delicatessen for a great selection of cheeses.

A half-hour drive to the nearby town of Morpeth (12.5 miles) will provide a wider range of shops and eateries, or you can find some lovely characterful shopping in the village shops at Longframlington, Longhorsley and Belsay.

Just a 20-minute drive away, The Bird in the Bush in Elsdon comes highly recommended for its bar and restaurant food, and Elsdon is also home to the award-winning, family-run microbrewery, First & Last. Or, if you would prefer to eat-in but let someone else do the cooking, you can order takeaway meals from various restaurants in both Rothbury and Morpeth, including fish and chips, Italian, Indian, Chinese and Thai cuisines.

Activities

Discover the National Trust’s Wallington; historical house meets rolling hills, woodlands and walled gardens spread across 13,000 acres. It offers something for everyone, whether that’s a relaxing day out to enjoy the impressive home of Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan and extensive grounds of lawns, lakes, woodland and farmland, or as somewhere to let off steam for all the family, through the bike hire and cycle trail and three play parks available in the West Wood.

Nearby Cragside House and Gardens offer a fascinating family-friendly day out where you can discover the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Crammed full of gadgets developed by Victorian inventor, innovator and landscape genius, Lord Armstrong, Cragside is truly a wonder of its age. The adventure playground with its network of paths and tunnels will be a huge hit with children and the gardens are an absolute delight.

There are plenty of walking routes nearby to choose from, including the Greenleighton Quarry to Fontburn Reservoir loop, which begins just a 3-minute drive from the property. Or walk up the Simonside Hills to enjoy the rugged and wildly beautiful landscape and breath-taking panorama view of the Cheviots and Northumberland coastline from the top. The various crags at Simonside are also fantastic spots for climbing and bouldering and fell runners will simply be in their element here with an abundance of over upland country to choose from.

If you prefer to spend your days on two wheels, why not explore nearby Kidland Forest and Upper Coquetdale, which is a super loop involving lovely woodland tracks and long riverside trails, or for something a little more high-energy, the Reivers Cycle Route will tick the right box.

For horse riders, set off on a quiet and peaceful trek along the seven-mile Harwood Forest loop and keep your eyes peeled along the way for the rare red squirrels known to reside here.

The stunning beaches of the Northumberland coast can be easily reached in under an hour - perfect for picnics with a bucket and spade. Visit Bamburgh Castle and its amazing dog-friendly beach where you can walk for miles on white sugary sands, stopping off for an ice-cream along the way, or why not follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne to complete the final journey of St. Cuthbert and enjoy the breath-taking views from the sheltered dune-fringed sands of this uniquely special place.

Also within easy reach, are the award-winning Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and one of Britain’s most iconic castles. With its rich history, exquisite art, beautiful gardens, and film location for Harry Potter, there is plenty of wizardly magic and mayhem to keep all ages entertained.

"We had a fabulous holiday at the Granary at Rothley East Shield. The location was perfect for visits to the National Park, the coast, Kielder and Hadrian’s Wall and the scenery on the drive from the cottage to Alnwick is stunning. The owner has done a fantastic job of furnishing and equipping the Granary. It was the best-equipped holiday home we have ever stayed in. It was a real home-from-home with a lovely kitchen with a quality dinner service and cutlery set and very comfortable seating around the huge dining table (often not the case in holiday accommodation). The bathrooms were great with luxury towels and we loved the huge and very powerful hot tub! This was our first holiday in Northumberland and we can’t wait to come back and will make a point of staying in the Granary again, if it ever has any availability! As usual, the communication from Crabtree and Crabtree was first-class. We will definitely be booking with you again."

"What a lovely weekend and a fabulous cottage! We spent a lovely day at Corbridge & King Edward's Bay in Tynemouth, the sun came out and we enjoyed the lobster from Riley's Fish Shack. Great walks around the cottage, loved the hot tub and we enjoyed meeting the friendly horses with the brilliant Katie - thank you."

The Bliss Family

"Lovely week at The Granary! A very cosy, well-equipped cottage. Loved the hot tub! Enjoyed visiting Wallington and Cragside National Trust, Dunstanburgh Golf Course and the lovely walk from Embleton to Craster. The cakes from Kirkharle Courtyard were delicious too!"
