Right at the most northerly tip of Northumberland sits Berwick upon Tweed, arguably England’s most dramatic walled town with a turbulent past having been captured or sacked some 13 times. Built to keep invading Scots from entering the town, a walk along these Elizabethan walls offers spectacular views across the River Tweed estuary and Berwick’s most famous landmark, The Royal Border Bridge. Artist L.S. Lowry was a huge fan of Berwick and there is a specially created Lowry Trail to explore and the town is home to a thriving arts and cultural scene, don’t miss a visit to the Maltings Theatre and Arts Centre.
