Overview

A beautifully-presented period property set around a pretty private courtyard, the Steward’s House comprises the private west wing of an impressive Grade II* listed country house set high on the banks of the River Tweed with superb views down river to the historic Union Bridge which links England and Scotland.

Traditional country house style

Inside, the spacious accommodation is presented in traditional country house style with antique items and original artworks. Downstairs there’s a large sitting room with log fire (logs are provided), Wi-Fi, HD TV with Freeview, DVD player and selection of DVDs along with games and books. The kitchen is well equipped and includes cookery books for keen cooks. The cloakroom and utility room provide ample storage space for outdoor kit.

Guests also have use of the superb original wood-panelled billiard room in the opposite wing of the house complete with full size billiard table along with air hockey and table football.

Upstairs the four individually-styled bedrooms are presented with muted Farrow and Ball paint colours and bespoke linen curtains. To ensure a restful night’s sleep, the beds are made up with high quality Egyptian cotton bed linen, feather and duck down duvets and pillows and Arran Arromatics toiletries are provided.

The Steward’s House is set around a fully-enclosed courtyard for guest’s private use. There is outside furniture and a gas barbecue for al fresco dining. Guests are welcome to explore the wider grounds which run down to the river and a network of excellent walks. A particular highlight is a walk to Scotland over the superb Union Bridge (currently undergoing renovation), the first of its type in the UK and the oldest of its type still in use, which links England and Scotland. From here one can explore the grounds of Paxton House or walk downstream all the way to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Upstream there’s a fabulous walk to the pretty village of Norham with some superb views along the way. The local village pub at Horncliffe is also within walking distance.

With direct access to one of the world's greatest salmon rivers on the doorstep, the Steward’s House is a perfect base for fishing parties. Trout fishing is included on the stretch of river below the house. The house sits above the Horncliffe beat on the English side and Tweedhill on the Scottish side but is within easy driving distance of a number of prime bottom and lower Tweed beats. Norham Angling Association permits can be purchased for more extensive trout fishing.

Location

The pretty village of Norham, a finalist for England's Favourite Village Award and famous for its imposing Norman castle ruins depicted in Turner’s iconic paintings, has a local shop, bakery, two pubs, a gunsmith and the celebrated Foreman's Butcher selling a fantastic selection of meats, pies, local cheeses, wines and even fishing flies. The fish and chip van on a Thursday night is also not to be missed!

More extensive shopping is available in Berwick-upon-Tweed (8 miles) or just over the border in Coldstream (8 miles). The property is also close to two of the area’s best eateries; The Collingwood Arms at Cornhill-on-Tweed and the Allanton Inn which specialise in dishes prepared using the wealth of local produce on offer.

Activities

The Chainbridge Honey Farm is within easy walking distance for a wander around the vintage museum and sample some fabulous honey. Paxton House is also just down the road and offers a lively events programme as well as housing an important collection of late 18th and early 19th century paintings loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland. Also nearby is the Ford and Etal estate where attractions include Northumberland’s only thatched pub, and the delightful Heatherslaw miniature steam railway.

The Steward’s House is an ideal base for discovering Northumberland's stunning and varied countryside. Explore the Heritage coastline, 25 miles of golden sands and secluded rocky coves. One of our favourites is Bamburgh Beach, with miles of pristine sand nestled behind huge sand dunes. At low tide take a trip across the causeway to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne, enjoy amazing views from the cliff top walks at St Abb’s Head or take a boat to the Farne Islands to see the resident colonies of Grey Seals and an impressive array of birdlife including Puffins.

A stone’s throw in the other direction will take you to charming market town of Wooler, gateway to the Cheviot Hills, the rolling blanket of people-free hillsides that slope and swell amidst the 400 square miles of Northumberland’s National Park. Here you will find some fabulous walking and cycling from gentle forays to serious hikes amidst spectacular scenery.

The region’s rich and often bloody history is reflected in the magnificent chain of castles that punctuate the landscape. In addition to Norham Castle, besieged at least 13 times by the Scots, those nearby include dramatic Bamburgh, perched high on its rocky outcrop, the vast, romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh, the palatial splendour of Floors, Chillingham, reputedly one of the most haunted buildings in England and home to the world’s only herd of wild cattle and foreboding Alnwick, made famous as the location for Hogwart’s School in the Harry Potter films.

The beautiful coastline provides the perfect opportunity to try your hand at kite surfing, sailing or coasteering. The nearby stables at Kimmerston offer tuition and farm hacks as well as beach rides and treks in the Cheviot Hills. There is excellent cycling on quiet country lanes around the village and on dedicated cycle routes including the Tweed Cycle Way and the Coast and Castles cycle route. The area is also a golfer’s paradise with several well-regarded courses nearby including the Championship Qualifying links course at Goswick and the Roxburghe Championship Course outside Kelso. For something a little different, clay pigeon shooting and archery are available locally and beginners are very welcome.

The magnificent city of Edinburgh is an easy day trip either about an hour by car or 45 minutes on the train from Berwick-upon-Tweed.

Reviews

"Just to say that we had a wonderful stay at Steward’s House and would highly recommend it to others. The house itself was amazing, with wonderful attention to detail and everything provided that you could wish for. Also, the owners were extremely helpful and hospitable. We would love to return and stay there again in the future."

"As always (this was our 3rd visit) Stewards House remains a wonderful property to stay at. It is beautifully appointed with the needs of the guests to the fore. Great location with lovely grounds and walks on the doorstep. We were very unfortunate with the weather but the owners were extremely helpful throughout ensuring that we were comfortable, safe and had everything we needed. Would recommend this property to anyone considering a stay in this area."

McIvor family

"Thank you for arranging our stay at Steward's House. Lovely place, lovely hosts, lovely location. We will hopefully be booking again in the near future."

Troy family

"Absolutely super- just perfect venue for family get together. Ideally placed for all - lovely local riverside walks from the house and beach walks only a short drive away. We will be back. House very spacious, clean, cosy and comfortable. Lovely bed linen! Kitchen well equipped. Welcome basket and spring flowers a nice touch but so is cling film, foil, washing up liquid, dishwasher tablets etc. All these make such a big difference and differentiate from run of the mill rentals."

Furber family

"I would like to thank Crabtree & Crabtree for handling our booking arrangements so professionally. Our family weekend was a wonderful success, thank you. The house was superb and fitted out superbly. My family have all been so impressed by the property that they are now talking about trying to make the trip again next year if not before. We had little contact with the owners but any we had was very friendly and helpful. Our weekend was dry but extremely cold and the estate looked wonderful with the sun on the heavy frost. The open fire was a great bonus."

Rudram family

"We had the most amazing experience. The house is beautiful and the setting is stunning. We could not fault the property, even the welcome pack was fab! Thank you so much."

Marland family

"We had a wonderful time at Stewards House which managed to feel both luxurious and homely at the same time! It worked very well with our dogs - with excellent local walks on our doorstep. We certainly expect to return and would recommend it to anyone."

Beeforth family

"Steward's House is a wonderful place to stay! The house is very beautiful and superbly equipped, just perfect for our family of eight, plus small dog. We only wish we could have stayed longer to fully explore the grounds & gardens, and all the great places in the vicinity. The youngsters had brought board games, but didn't need them, as there were plenty available in the house. They also made good use of the pool table. The gated courtyard was perfect, as I didn't have to worry about the dog. With 'poo bags' and doggie treats you have thought of everything! We had a wonderful long weekend. It was a case of so much to do, so little time!"

Mountjoy family

"We thought that the house was lovely; very well equipped, furnished and very comfortable. The location was absolutely stunning. We met the owners walking their dogs and said that they were lovely. Really nice of the owners to allow their guests to wander over the property. All the children enjoyed ambling up to the horses with a carrot or two, I hope they haven't spoiled them. All in all I don't think that there's very much, if anything, that could have made my stay more enjoyable. Thank you very much for allowing us to stay."

Greenwood family

"We very much enjoyed our week at the Stewards House which was one of the best equipped with the most luxurious interior design of a holiday let we have stayed in. We also really appreciated the lovely welcome basket including yummy Easter eggs and prosecco and whoever laid on the incredible weather should also be thanked. The owners were also really kind and made some great recommendations of local places to visit and eat at. We will be highly recommending not only Northumberland and the Stewards House but also Crabtree & Crabtree."

Francis family

"We had a lovely weekend at Steward's House. The house and location were great. The house had everything you could need and the welcome basket was a thoughtful touch. We do love that part of the world and will visit again."

Nielson family

"We stayed at Steward’s House as a 2 family party & one dog from 26 October 19 – 2 November 2019 and had a fantastic week. The house is fabulous and the extra things provided such as a welcome hamper and kitchen/laundry items such as tea towels/washing up liquid, foil, dishwasher tablets and laundry detergent went above and beyond what we expected to be provided. There was even treats for our dog! There is a large kitchen and a lovely lounge for which we made good use of the open fire every night and plenty of logs are available along with board games etc to keep everyone entertained. If you like reading there is plenty of reading materials to suit all tastes too. The 4 bedrooms upstairs were fantastic and the fact the 2 double bedrooms each had their own en-suite (with bath & shower) was an added bonus and meant you weren’t fighting over getting in the bathroom and had some privacy if you wanted a soak in the bath after a day out walking/sight-seeing. The house was always warm as there was no restriction on times you could have the heating on (we didn’t need to change the pre-set times) and if you needed to dry clothes the boiler room had clothes hangers for you to do this. We were left eggs on the doorstep one morning from the owners chickens and you could definitely tell they were from free range chickens. The location of the house was ideal for us. We had an amazing week at Steward’s House and cannot fault it at all and if we were to visit this area again would definitely not hesitate to re-book. We would therefore thoroughly recommend Steward’s House to anyone thinking of booking a stay there. A 5 star house."
