No. 6
Alnmouth has a lot going for it: not only a sandy beach and beautiful old buildings, but tempting shops and an unforgettable setting on a wind-sheltered river estuary. It’s one of Northumberland’s most in-demand locations – and here’s a family home within walking distance of everything.
Set a few hundred metres – close enough for convenience; far enough for quiet – from the village centre, No. 6 is spread over three floors plus a decked garden. In summer, an outdoor/indoor layout encourages al-fresco living and keeps you cool; in winter, the log burner ensures everyone stays snugly warm. Behind a white clapboard-style facade, the bright but neutral interior design is lifted by coastal, tranquil hues and, with splashes of colourful local artwork, manages to be contemporary but homely all at once.
Most socialising will be done on the middle floor, whose open design encompasses a kitchen and a sitting room. The former is full of impressive, integrated amenities – down to its built-in wine rack and bean-to-cup coffee machine plus ample seating: a six-person dining table, and a more informal breakfast bar with two stools on which you can perch while you chat and drink coffee. Opposite, a pair of plump, substantial sofas face a Smart TV (provided with a Firestick) where you can cosy up and enjoy some down time after fun-filled days walking, swimming or exploring.
Venture further upstairs to find the main bedroom, where you’ll find a king-sized bed accompanied by a dressing table and an attractive wicker storage trunk. On the ground floor are a twin room and another bedroom arranged either to contain two more twin beds or a single, super-king unit. These both share a bathroom – with a tub and toe-pleasing underfloor heating – and separate shower room. The utility room on this level, meanwhile, makes a good place for dogs (two four-legged friends are welcome here) to eat and sleep.
Much like the interiors, the garden of No.6 is set on different levels. First comes the patio and artificial lawn. Bordered by colourful flowers and leafy shrubs, it is a super spot for catching a few rays or for some al fresco dining – while there isn’t a table outside bi-folding doors in open-pan kitchen / living room open onto the garden here via modern bi-folding door – and is connected to a handy, lower patio area by a flight of stone steps. A large storage box containing a beach trolley plus buckets and spades can be found here. There’s also plenty of space inside the box to store bodyboards, frisbees and the like in here too, as well as bikes beside it – perfect for the adventures on the golden sand beach that is just a ten-minute scamper away.
Head south and you’ll immediately be on Alnmouth’s high street, which gradually slopes down before dramatically concluding on the open estuary. Alnmouth Golf Club, England’s fourth oldest, begins just to the north of the high street. ‘Lover’s Walk’ takes you on a mile-long wander from the cottage along the estuary, a 2-mile stroll leads you to St Cuthbert’s Cross with stunning views looking back at the colourful village, and of course with miles of soft, golden sand, there is plenty of exploring to be done around Alnmouth.
If you’d like to browse the streets of other local towns, you’re handily close to market town Alnwick, famed for its dramatic castle, which starred in Harry Potter films, and to the quaint, kipper-making village of Craster whose handsome Coastal Path walks are a must for keen ramblers.
