Six miles and seven miles respectively will take you to the charming villages of Belford and Wooler where you will find a good selection of small town shopping, as well as a selection of eateries, inns and pubs. Alternatively a more extensive range of amenities, including large supermarkets, can be found in Berwick-upon-Tweed just a short twelve mile drive away.
Limeworks Cottage is located in the heart of North Northumberland and is exceptionally well placed for exploring the wider area. Seven miles in one direction will take you to the edge of the Northumberland National Park, a designated area of outstanding natural beauty with over 400 square miles of stunning landscapes, criss-crossed by over 700 miles of walking, biking and riding trails. It is also England’s first, and Europe’s largest, International Dark Sky Park which means that it is perfect for a spot of star gazing. On a clear night you will see stunning Meteor Showers, the Milky Way and even the Andromeda Galaxy - an astonishing 2.5 million light years away!
The dramatic beauty of the Cheviot Hills can be accessed from Wooler (7 miles) where walkers and mountain bikers can follow the routes of ancient cattle drovers, taking in Iron Age stone fortifications and traces of Bronze Age hillforts amidst the tranquil and rugged landscape. Follow the legend of St. Cuthbert with a visit to the Cuddy’s Cave (2 miles) a short walk exploring the area around this historic feature, or alternatively join Northumberland Park Rangers for a guided walk where you will learn much about the heritage and wildlife of the area and enjoy some outstanding vistas along the way. For cycling, you will find everything from gentle low-level meanders to big hill country treks, including long-distance routes such as the Pennine Cycleway or the cycle challenges of the Wooler Wheel Hub.
For families, the Breamish Valley is a popular area with pretty river picnic spots where children can paddle, followed by a walk to the lovely waterfall at Linhope Spout where you may even spot some wild Cheviot goats along the way! Alternatively, a warm welcome awaits you at Ford & Etal Estates (8 miles) which has a super range of child friendly activities with over 20 attractions to explore, including a 15” gauge steam railway, fishing, canoeing, cycle hire and riding centre.
The stunning heritage coastline is just a short drive away with miles of pristine sandy beaches, jolly pubs serving the freshest fish and chips, and picture postcard coastal villages with charming galleries and gift shops. Experience the exhilarating thrill of kitesurfing at Bamburgh, coasteering at Beadnell or perhaps just enjoy the simple pleasures of a picnic and a game of beach cricket on sands which remain almost deserted even in the summer months.
History buffs will be enchanted by the rich heritage of the area, where dramatic castles and grand stately homes punctuate the landscape here. Follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne (7 miles) to complete the final journey of St. Cuthbert, or simply sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views from the sheltered dune-fringed sands of this uniquely special place.

"I write following a recent stay at Limeworks Cottage to say thank you for a most enjoyable stay and for the generous welcome basket. The trip was for my mothers 70th birthday and was a fantastic venue to celebrate. I would certainly recommend the cottage and will certainly look to Crabtree & Crabtree for future bookings."Gudgins family
"Once again we have very much enjoyed our stay at Limeworks Cottage, the cottage and grounds are absolutely fantastic, we love the solitude as do our border collies. A perfect place to unwind after a day out walking or visiting the beach. The service from Crabtree and Crabtree is excellent, as always. We are to visit Limeworks again later on in the year."Baxter family
"We had a lovely time at Limeworks Cottage. The facilities were excellent and the standard of cleanliness very high and we appreciated the welcome pack. We were also blessed with wonderful weather for the time of year. We have already recommended you to our friends and family."Greaves family
"We really enjoyed our short break in Limeworks Cottage. It was nice and warm on our arrival, due to the Aga in the kitchen, furnished very comfortably and very spacious. The welcome pack was very much appreciated, as were all the supplies left, e.g. Coffee, tea, sugar, etc. as well as kitchen larder items like flour. Everything was very good, even the free supply of logs for the fire. We all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, cooking up some great dishes in the superb kitchen, visiting Alnwick Garden, Chillingham Castle and heaps of wonderful beaches. We know the area very well but never tire of spending quality time revisiting such a wonderful place. We would certainly love to return in the future. Thank you for such a lovely house."Barraclough family
"We had an absolutely wonderful time at Limeworks Cottage. The attention to detail was second to none, from the welcome basket and flowers when we arrived to the maps and array of books/magazines. We will be definitely going back to the cottage, we are country people, my husband is a farmer so it was ideal for him. I loved using the Aga and stretching my cooking ability. It was wonderful to be able to let Mollie into the garden and not have to worry about her."Williams family
"We had an absolutely wonderful Christmas at Limeworks Cottage, the cottage was decorated with a lovely Christmas tree and decorations and we also had a Christmas hamper awaiting us. We had a relaxing week with cosy evenings in front of the open fire with our 2 collies who love it here. We cannot say anything more about Limeworks other than it is well recommended and surrounding area is well worth a visit."Baxter family
"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we're all very comfortable. We have enjoyed many holiday breaks with Crabtree & Crabtree and this one also lived up to our expectations and your high standards. We will certainly look forward to returning to Limeworks Cottage in the future. Many thanks again for a lovely holiday."Calder family
"Just a quick email to say we found Limeworks Cottage to be exceptional in every respect. The attention to detail right down to doggy treats was fantastic and greatly appreciated by our 4 legged friends! We loved the toiletries provided which were really luxurious. We also found the service from Crabtree & Crabtree to be excellent. We will definitely use you again and have already recommended you to friends."Megahy family
"Another wonderful week at Limeworks, our home from home. The cottage is warm, comfortable and very cosy. A day riding at Kimmerston was great, the horses were so well behaved and riding across the moor was spectacular. The people at Kimmerston was so friendly and helpful, then back to Limeworks for a hot bath! Booking, arrival and departure are all easy and we felt very well looked after. Will be back again soon."Nash family
"We very much enjoyed staying at Limeworks Cottage. The cottage was spacious and clean and we especially liked the Aga, as did our dogs! The garden was great and safe for the dogs and we loved all the wildlife around the cottage, especially the barn owl and hares. We are looking forward to returning next year."Hall family
"We spent a week at Limeworks Cottage. We had a brilliant time. The house proved the perfect place for us all! We loved the cosy kitchen with the trusty AGA and big pine table. There was everything we needed and the place was brilliantly equipped. We also loved the crisp white bed linen, the gorgeous bathrooms, the large garden and beautiful views. The bats' aerial display at dusk was impressive and the horses next to the garden were very friendly. We have absolutely no complaints and all want to return - particularly the dogs! For some of us it was our first visit to Northumberland and we were impressed by it. What a beautiful area! The beaches are vast, clean, uncrowded and a dream for doggies, children and adults alike. The boat trip out to the Farne Islands to see the seals was spectacular and a must. We are all keen to visit the cottage again; thank you to Crabtree & Crabtree, the owners and the housekeeper."Sewell family
"We had very relaxing week at Limeworks Cottage which is well equipped and furnished to a very high standard. Enjoyed cooking and socialising in the kitchen area with the aga and range then retiring to a log fire in the living room on a cold winter evening. Ideally situated to explore the surrounding area and walking the dogs. Many thanks for the generous welcome pack. We will return."Bowman family
"What a brilliant week our family had at Limeworks Cottage. It far exceeded our expectations, beautifully presented, extremely well equipped and cleaned to a high standard. Thank you for the lovely welcome hamper. Would definitely recommend the cottage and your company."Shanks family
"We absolutely love Limeworks Cottage, we have stayed here many time with our dogs who equally love the grounds and the cottage, especially chilling in front of the open fire. The service from Crabtree & Crabtree is excellent and we have no hesitation in recommending their services."Baxter family
"I rarely reply to requests for feedback, but feel I must say a huge thank you to all involved in our recent stay at Limeworks Cottage. It was everything we hoped for - clean, very comfortable and we settled in to a happy, warm stay! Luckily we managed to catch hours of sunny, autumnal, invigorating walks. Many thanks indeed and I look forward to staying with you again before too long."Mrs Edwards
"We really enjoyed our visit to Limeworks cottage in December it was a change to go in Winter. Pity about the Aga not working but that did not spoil anything. Over the years we have always rated Limeworks as outstanding just as we rate Crabtree and Crabtree and it is so sad that it is being sold. We have such happy memories of the place."Mr Fell and Friends
"Limeworks was a lovely house, very well furnished and decorated, no expense spared - big costly mirrors and rugs, pictures, tasteful decor and accessories, excellent bathrooms, the beds were good and the linens of excellent quality. We enjoyed the isolated location and the sweeping views."Lowe family
"We had a wonderful stay. Peaceful and relaxing. We were very fortunate with the weather and the dogs ran their legs off on some stunning beach walks. Thank you all for making it possible. Limeworks Cottage is beautiful."Ms Edwards
"We had the most magical stay at Limeworks Cottage it surpassed all of our expectations from the moment we arrived we did not want to leave. The moment we opened the front door and saw the amazing welcome pack waiting on the kitchen island and then walked through to see all of the beautiful rooms we felt instantly relaxed. The outside space at the cottage was heaven for our dogs who had the best time and we struggled to get in the car to go home. Thank you for such a memorable stay and for all of your help with the booking it has been much appreciated. Thank you once again."Robinson family
"We had a truly wonderful week at Limeworks Cottage. This was the best holiday cottage we had ever stayed in and was perfect for our three generations. The welcome pack was amazing. All the rooms were beautifully furnished and were so warm and cosy. The beds were very comfortable with high quality linens and the ample towels were thick and fluffy. We felt like we were staying in a 5* hotel rather than a self catering holiday cottage. Every room had the “wow” factor and we loved the huge kitchen with its cosy Aga. The garden and grounds were perfect and so peaceful. Our 22 month twin grandsons absolutely loved seeing the horses in a neighbouring field. The bluebell wood at the back of the cottage was an added extra. We would also like to especially thank Crabtree and Crabtree who were extremely helpful and responded straight away to all my pre-booking queries. We will certainly use Crabtree and Crabtree again. Thanks for a fantastic holiday."Cundy family
