For a greater choice, the attractive, historic town of Kelso is about 10 miles from the house and offers a diverse mix of independent shops, a good selection of lively pubs and restaurants, and is host to regular National Hunt race meetings for a great day out.

Alternatively, 10 miles to the east, the charming market town of Duns offers a good range of small town shopping including a butchers, bakery, country and fishing store, a small co-op supermarket as well as a small selection of local gift and coffee shops. The Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in Duns has been recently revamped and is dedicated to the life and career of racing driver Jim Clark. The museum includes a unique collection of 100 trophies and memorabilia.

Activities

There is excellent walking, cycling and riding in the area from gentle ambles to more challenging routes, including tracks across the Greenlaw Moor which are suitable for off-road bikes, or the Borderloop Cycling Route which passes close-by and is a stunning long-distance journey taking in wonderful scenery and attractions all the way down to the coast. Alternatively join the route for a shorter stretch, taking in quiet roads and a variety of terrain which can be matched to your cycling skills and experience.

The final stretch of The Southern Upland Way runs from Lauder to Cockburnspath, and walkers can join this section at Longformacus (20 mins drive) for a short walk, or enjoy a full day’s trekking through the rolling scenery of the Lammermuir Hills, taking in the excellent viewpoints of the Twin Law Cairns all the way down to the spectacular cliff-top scenery of the heritage coastline.

There are a number of sites nearby which offer a diverse variety of birdlife and wildlife. Hule Moss on Greenlaw Moor offers extensive views and rewarding bird spotting opportunities on loch, marsh and heather moorland while sites at nearby Westruther Moor, Gordon Moss and Duns Castle Estate all provide fantastic opportunities for walking, birdwatching and photography amidst peaceful and scenic surroundings.

For country sports, Halliburton is well-equipped for sporting parties with a large drying / boot room and gun cabinet, and excellent shooting can be found on Charterhall Estate near Duns who have a long established reputation for field sports, offering pheasant shooting (driven or walked up), pigeon flighting, roe stalking and driven hare.

Trout fishing is available on approximately 8 miles of the Blackadder Water, a tributary of the Whiteadder, through the Greenlaw Angling Association, a small club which dates back to 1880. The season is from 1 April to 6 October for brown trout only, but with easy access and at only £4 for a day visitor pass, it can offer some super sport when river conditions are right. Salmon fishing is available on the legendary River Tweed just a few miles away, while the Watch Reservoir sits a little further afield for those seeking sport in a still water venue.

For golf enthusiasts, Duns Golf Club is a scenic upland course situated at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills, just a ten minute drive from the property. A further 16 courses are within a 30 mile radius, including the renowned Roxburghe Championship course near Kelso and the very pretty Hirsel course at Coldstream.

A half hour’s drive will take you to the stunning beaches of the heritage coastline, including Bamburgh, Holy Island and St. Abbs Head. Along the way, perhaps take time to soak in the rich history of the area by following the chain of castles and historic buildings that punctuate the landscape here - Thirlestane, Floors, Manderston and Mellerstain are all just a short drive away. The magnificent city of Edinburgh is an easy day trip by car or 45 minutes on the train from Berwick.

Reviews

"We were delighted with the booking. Halliburton was a wonderful property in a fantastic location, allowing us to enjoy a very relaxing New Year weekend. Thanks again for a great stay."

Mr Raine

"we have a lovely week at Halliburton- enjoyed by all - young and old. Weather was good, lots to do in the area and house was extremely comfortable. It is the best kitted out house we have stayed in (and we have stayed in quite a few) and it exceeded our expectations. The beds and linen were comfortable and showers good so no complaints from us. Would not hesitate to recommend it to others or indeed to book again to go there"

Buckley Family

"We have had a great week. The house was very comfortable and had everything we needed. We loved the area and look forward to returning. Thank you for your great service."

Mackay family

"Wonderful house. We had a fantastic time. Really peaceful. Very well equipped. Lovely welcome goodies and provisions. We will definitely be returning."

McLaggan family

"I have nothing but positive comments about Halliburton. The house was fantastic in a lovely setting and the welcome basket amazing. We were all very impressed and would goes as far as to say it is the best property and experience we have had as a group. As we have been going away twice a year for the last 6yrs this is quite a statement. Everything we needed had been thought of and supplied. The housekeeper was lovely. There is a good possibility we will return."

Roseburgh family

"Our stay at Halliburton was absolutely fabulous. The house was beautiful, both in how it was presented and how it is maintained. The location was perfect and the surroundings were gorgeous. The welcome pack was a much appreciated and enjoyed little surprise upon arrival. I speak on behalf of all 8 of us when I say we would stay there again in a heartbeat! Our stay was just amazing, and we are dying to get back out to Halliburton sometime in the near future."

Anglesey family

"We loved our stay at Halliburton thank you so much for recommending it to us, we will be booking again. The house was amazing & so well equipped, we really appreciated the tray of nibbles & essentials we found on our arrival for us & the dog. We love cooking & it was wonderful to have such a good kitchen with every appliance & baking tin you would ever need, we even cooked drop scones on the wood stove in the living room. Thank you to Crabtree & Crabtree and thank you to the owners for providing us with such a wonderful base for our holiday which was better than we imagined."

Moffat family

"We love the isolation of Haliburton and hope we can rent next year."

Mr Midwood

"We had a wonderful time at Halliburton. Will book with you again as always good standard of house and service from your company. Thanks again"

Graham Family

"We felt that the house offered exceptional comfort, space and tranquillity.

The location provided a new area for us to explore (we normally head up to the North West), and we thoroughly enjoyed visiting nearby St. Abbs, Melrose and Kelso.

That said, the lovely garden and unspoilt views provided a great reason not to head anywhere in particular.

The kitchen was especially well equipped and we loved the beautiful furniture, very comfortable beds and general elegant homeliness."

Moss Family

"I would like to say on behalf of my wife and our two sons and families that Halliburton well exceeded our expectations both as a holiday home and location and we were extremely happy to be able to extend our stay there. I should also say that our two dalmatians loved the holiday. This was our second year holidaying in The Borders at one of your residences and we thought it would be a hard act to follow the previous, but Halliburton certainly rose to the challenge and had a slight edge over the former. The weather, apart from one day added to the pleasure of being in the rolling hills around Greenlaw and seeing all the animals on the quiet country lane up to Halliburton. Many thanks for your excellent services."

Christian Family

"We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Halliburton. Your service was excellent and will certainly be using you again and recommending to friends and family. The welcoming package was very nice, lovely bread! The linen, toiletries, towels were a very high standard."

Ms Gibbons

"We had a wonderful stay at Halliburton. The house is one of the best we have ever stayed in. Very well equipped; easy to use heating; comfy beds; lovely bath and shower; beautiful surroundings."

Miss Stephenson

"Thank you, we had a great stay at Halliburton. We thought the setting was beautiful and the house really well furnished and equipped. We were very happy."
