Overview

A superb property in an outstanding setting with superb views over rolling farmland to the Cheviot Hills beyond, Fernie provides an idyllic destination for families, larger groups and lovers of the great outdoors to get away from it all and explore the magnificent surrounding countryside.

Wonderfully light and bright

An impressive conversion of a barn and former shepherd’s cottage, the accommodation at Fernie is wonderfully light and bright with fabulous views from every room. The open plan living areas are ideal for large groups with a spacious kitchen and mezzanine level sitting room, more formal drawing room and separate dining room. Original exposed beams, working fireplaces, unusual antique items and interesting artwork and objets d’art add charm and character.

Fernie’s extensive outside space offers a choice of places to relax and enjoy the views and for children to play. To the front of the house is a south facing courtyard garden with outside seating area, barbecue and fish pond; perfect for that morning cup of coffee or cocktails in the evening with stunning views of the Cheviot Hills. To the rear of the house is a secluded walled garden, planted in traditional cottage style with old fashioned roses and hardy perennials which provides an idyllic spot for relaxing with a good book under the damson trees. Accessed from the walled garden through a pergola adorned with rambling roses and clematis flowering throughout the summer, a large flat lawn provides the ideal setting for a game of football or croquet.

To the rear of the house are two paddocks perfect for guests wishing to bring their own ponies and horses. Surrounding the paddocks is a woodland margin walk, planted 15 years ago by the existing owners with a mixture of cherry trees, hazel copses, birch as well as old fashioned roses and briars, with a blaze of daffodils during the spring; ideal for the early morning walk with the dogs.

Access - Important

Fernie is situated in a fabulous secluded position accessed by a mile long farm track. Care should be taken as any adverse weather can leave the track rutted. Please drive slowly paying particular attention to the road surface at this time. Avoid low suspension vehicles if at all possible. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

Location

Despite Mindrum’s rural location, the estate is remarkably accessible with good local amenities close by. The cottage is 11 miles from Cornhill on Tweed which offers an excellent village shop selling pies and delicious local goodies and the Collingwood Arms which has a lively bar and restaurant specialising in dishes prepared using the wealth of local produce on offer. More extensive shopping including a good range of independent shops, pubs and restaurants are available at Kelso and Wooler which are 21 and 23 miles respectively.

Reviews

"Just wanted to say what a fantastic holiday we had in Fernie. It was a lovely house. I don't think I have any improvements to suggest. It was pretty perfect! The welcome basket was fab. The best one we have ever had. Thanks for a great holiday."

Kilner family

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, thank you. Fernie more than exceeded our expectations. It had wow and was clean, warm, comfortable, spacious, wonderfully equipped, etc. The garden was great too and it must be lovely to sit outside in the summer. As the former residence of the owners it has a really homely feel. We could have stayed in all week just reading the amazing selection of books. We were a group of retired walkers and enjoyed exploring the coast and countryside by day. We did all our own catering for which the large kitchen and wonderful dining room were ideal. We found Fernie excellent value for money and may well be back before long. We shall certainly recommend it to friends."

Evans family

"We had a wonderful stay at Fernie and would highly recommend it. The booking process was efficient and simple. The advertised details and photos were accurate and informative. The property was fantastic. It was clean, and superbly well equipped. We were a party of 12 and a dog (3 generations) celebrating a Golden Wedding. We self catered all weekend (3 nights) and on the middle night had a celebratory 3 course meal, with a choice of main courses and deserts. We had done some preparation at home but found the property so well equipped that catering for that number to a decent level was was easily achievable. The property was warm and comfortable and absorbed the numbers very easily. It was remote and very peaceful. The lovely welcome hamper was much appreciated (and demolished!)."

Atkinson family

"Everyone had an absolutely super time and it was the best Scottish trip ever and we have done quite a few!"

Scott family

"We had a lovely stay at Fernie, thanks very much. The house was beautiful. This was our second Crabtree & Crabtree property so we'll definitely be back next year."

King family

"We had a great time at Fernie. Fernie was a wonderful centre for a family holiday in Northumbria and we found lots to do. Our party aged from 2 to 68 years and we were all very comfortable in the house. The drive down to the house seemed a bit challenging at first but we quickly got used to it and we enjoyed the remoteness of the place. No worries that the children playing outside might disturb the neighbours! The place is very well equipped, especially the kitchen. We will certainly recommend Fernie to our friends and for any group that needed lots of space out in the countryside, especially with children."
