A dog-friendly Grade II listed cottage in the historic town of Bishop Auckland.

This pretty cottage set beside the grand gates of the Auckland Palace – the historic residence of the bishops of Durham, after one of whom it is named – is a relaxing base from which to enjoy the area’s attractions. With the Palace’s impressive castle, museums and restaurants on your doorstep, as well as their exciting calendar of events and activities, it’s the perfect spot for a varied retreat with friends or family.

Enter the cottage into the inner hallway, with the living room lying immediately to the left. Combining honeyed Indian Yellow walls with comfy sofas and original artworks, it’s a cosy place to settle in with a book or evening cocktail. Further along the hall towards the rear of the cottage you’ll find the separate dining room, with a door which leads into the kitchen. Spacious and inviting, it features a separate pantry and a door which leads out to the enclosed lawned garden – complete with garden furniture so you can dine al fresco when the sun is shining. South-facing and with views over the Auckland Palace’s stunning 17th-century Walled Garden, you’ll happily while away hours here during the warmer months.

The three bedrooms are located upstairs and are each home to king size beds. The first of these can also be configured as twins and enjoys views out to the marketplace. The second bedroom lies down a couple of steps and looks out across the Walled Garden which bursts into colour in the spring. The third and final bedroom is decorated with a rose pink colour palette, complemented by striped textiles, and enjoys views of the gates and clock tower above. All bedrooms are served by a family bathroom on this floor with a walk-in shower.

An area of rich history and beautiful landscapes, there’s plenty to keep you occupied in County Durham. In addition to all the attractions of the Auckland Project, look forward to days spent on the trails in Weardale and Teesdale in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or get immersed in the storied pasts of Raby Castle or the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Durham’s castle and cathedral, both of which are just a short drive away.

Location

Situated between Durham and Darlington and serving as the gateway to the Durham Dales, Bishop Auckland combines the region's rich ecclesiastical history with ease of access to its diverse countryside and finest visitor attractions. Most notably, the town is home to the grand Auckland Palace, the residence of the bishops of Durham since the 12th century, which is encompassed by sweeping grounds and several museums.

The Spanish Gallery is the UK’s first gallery dedicated to the art and culture of the Spanish Golden Age, sure to fascinate devotees of fine art and history alike, while the Mining Art Gallery and Faith Museum offer unique perspectives on the past through themes that are particularly pertinent to the region. For families, the Weardale Railway, Deer Park, and a busy calendar of events from young archaeologist clubs to painting workshops are perfect for keeping little ones busy. The Estate is also home to three excellent restaurants, with something sure to tempt everyone.

In addition to all the attractions of the Auckland Palace Estate, there's an abundance of brilliant walking trails and unspoilt landscapes to be discovered in the Durham Dales of Weardale and Teesdale and in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
