Overview

Perfect seclusion close to the Northumberland coast.

A stylish, architecturally-designed home which wouldn’t look out of place in an architectural magazine

If you value peace and perfect seclusion, then you’ll treasure Bellshill Bothy. This eye-catching cottage is positioned at the end of a short drive, with woodland on one side and an expanse of fields all around. No other properties look over it, and no main roads barrel by.

Better still, the home sits on a slight incline, providing it with stupendous views as far as the Northumberland coast and — just about visible six miles away — Bamburgh Castle. The expanse of sky suits stargazing, too; on clear nights, it’s an incredible show.

Built from a combination of bleached timber and honey stone, the Bothy ought to please modern architecture buffs with its slanted roof, solar panels and large windows. Yet inside, all is delightfully homely. Plants and paintings festoon the hallway as doors lead into an open-plan living area where you’ll find the sitting area, warmed by a log-burner, and the wooden-floored kitchen. This surrounds a dining table, illuminated by hip pendant lights.

Across the hallway you’ll find a separate snug for reading, TV watching or even wildlife watching — deer might pass by, and birds are frequent — using provided binoculars. Just like the sitting room, this space can be cheerfully bright by day thanks to those big windows, but cosy and, well, snug after dark.

One of the bedrooms is also on the ground floor — handy for anyone of reduced mobility — while another king-sized, en suite unit awaits upstairs. Both of these rooms are richly decorated with leafy wallpaper plus flora-themed paintings and pottery. The upstairs twin room, however, which is also en-suite, is characterised by animal-themed artwork sure to please young children. Thanks to balcony windows, each first-floor bedroom again affords glorious country views.

Outside, the wrap-around patio and dining table under the pergola enable lengthy al-fresco lunches or dinners. Beyond that, your six acres of land incorporates a large, enclosed lawned garden plus, just into those woods, seats around an atmospheric firepit — the perfect place for storytelling while you toast marshmallows.

The coast is easily reached, with Bamburgh’s beach, castle and charming village just a 15-minute drive. Holy Island and Alnwick are also within easy reach.

The White Swan in nearby Warenford (2.5 miles) is known for serving good pub food, and there are also a number of excellent local pubs in Chatton (5.2 miles) and Bamburgh (6 miles), including The Potted Lobster which comes particularly recommended for their seafood and warm, friendly atmosphere. A little further afield, the delightful Ship Inn at Low Newton (11.9 miles) is famous for its crab dishes and microbrewery.

If you’re heading to Holy Island for the day, call in at The Barn at Beal (9.7 miles), which serves hearty breakfast dishes and fresh seafood-inspired lunches, all with stunning panoramic views. Or head further north up the coast to Berwick-upon-Tweed which has a range of restaurants and coffee shops as well as large supermarkets if you are looking to do some home cooking.

Inland, the charming village of Wooler (9.8 miles) offers good local amenities, including small independent shopping, cafes and restaurants, including the highly regarded Milan Restaurant reviewed by renowned food critic AA Gill. For provisions, it has a bakery, a high quality butchers shop as well as ‘The Good Life’, a wonderful deli selling cheeses, cured meats and health foods.

Activities

The stunning heritage coast is just a ten minute drive with miles of pristine sandy beaches, jolly pubs serving the freshest fish and chips, and picture postcard coastal villages with charming galleries and gift shops waiting to be explored. Experience the exhilarating thrill of kitesurfing at Bamburgh, coasteering at Beadnell or perhaps just enjoy the simple pleasures of a picnic and a game of beach cricket on sands which remain almost deserted even in the summer months.

History buffs will be enchanted by the rich heritage of the area, where dramatic castles and grand stately homes punctuate the landscape - Bamburgh, Alnwick Castle & Gardens, Warkworth and Chillingham to name but a few.

Sitting within easy reach of the Northumberland National Park, the property is ideally placed for walking and enjoying the great outdoors. The outstanding countryside offers gentle walks in scenic surroundings, while the wider area enjoys a large number of designated walking routes, including more challenging hikes amidst the dramatic scenery of the Northumberland countryside.

Nearby Wooler is at the heart of one of the richest archaeological landscapes in North-west Europe and spectacular Iron Age hillforts and settlements rim the Cheviots, while the enigmatic prehistoric cup & ring markings abound across the rock surfaces in this area. Alternatively, follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne to complete the final journey of St. Cuthbert, or simply sit back and enjoy the breathtaking views from the sheltered dune-fringed sands of this uniquely special place

For cycling and mountain biking, you will find everything from gentle low-level meanders to big hill country treks including trails for family-friendly recreation. For more challenging terrain, you can join long-distance routes such as the Pennine Cycleway, or try the Sandstone Way which meanders down the coast and has shorter sections for those with just an hour or two to spare.

For family-friendly activities, head to Alnwick Castle where you will find an activity programme brimming with adventure. Children can take part in all sorts of magic and mayhem inspired by the characters of Harry Potter; test their knightly courage in the Dragon Quest; or explore a world of wobbly rope bridges and treetop walkways within the stunning setting of Alnwick Gardens.
