Brown Trout & Grayling Season
Tweed and its tributaries offer excellent brown trout and grayling fishing which is often overshadowed by its reputation as a world class salmon river. The brown trout fishing season extends from 15 March to 6 October although the majority of trout clubs restrict the season to 1 April to 30 September. Fishing for trout and grayling on Sundays is legal (unlike salmon and sea trout) but most clubs do not permit Sunday fishing. There is no closed season for grayling fishing but the fishing is at its best from October to February and many clubs will restrict the season.
Booking Trout & Grayling Fishing
In most instances, the brown trout fishing rights are let by the beat owner to the local angling club or association and anglers must therefore purchase permits from the relevant club. Permits are usually sold by the day, week and season and are relatively inexpensive; between £5 and £10 per day in most cases. Frequently discounts are offered for juniors and senior citizens. Some clubs have their own web sites allowing purchase of tickets online, others make permits available from local shops. Most clubs include the right to fish for grayling within the trout permit. Some beat owners will allow grayling fishing on their beat during the winter season. Anglers must have written permission in accordance with the Tweed Angling Code for grayling.
Sea Trout Fishing
Sea trout fishing on Tweed is becoming increasingly sought after in its own right with many beats up and down the river showing some excellent returns. The main tributaries, particularly the Whiteadder, Till and Teviot, also offer excellent opportunities for sea trout. The main run begins in June and July and continues into the autumn. Sea trout fishing is let with the right to fish for salmon and the salmon fishing regulations therefore apply.
