Textiles & Design

Enquiry>

The School of Textiles & Design at Heriot Watt University is the second oldest textile institution in the world dating back to 1883.  It is one of the foremost textile institutions, with links to leading designers and manufacturers including Dame Vivienne Westwood, Bruce Oldfield, Jasper Conran, Mary Quant and Colin McDowell.

Each summer, the School opens its doors to offer an exciting workshop programme where you can combine a break in the beautiful Scottish Borders and take the opportunity to learn some new design skills in an area synonymous with textile production.

Printed Textiles

Available as either a 3 or 5 day course, you will learn about screen printing processes, develop design ideas, understand composition, colour, and textile techniques leading to production of a final printed piece.

Machine Knitted Fabrics

Learn about yarns and fibres, yarn counts, creating textures and patterns using a range of knitted structures, as well as shaping techniques and more complex methods with colour change and structure detail.

Introduction to Weave

A rare opportunity to learn the ancient art of weaving in the largest weaving studio in Europe.  Over five days, you will learn about colour, pattern and texture through the use of woven structures, design development, and warp preparation processes leading to production of a final woven piece.

Fashion Construction

Uncover the designer in you in this 3 or 5 day course where you will learn about design, pattern, and cutting, as well as professional techniques in construction leading to production of a final garment.
