Cookery Classes & Demonstrations


If you are a passionate foodie or simply enjoy pottering in the kitchen, you may like the idea of a cookery course or demonstration for a different type of holiday experience.

The options are wide and varied - choose from a half or full day session where you can learn some new techniques, clever tips and delicious new recipes, and you even get to enjoy the heavenly results at the end!

For cookery courses, the theme is entirely up to you - Thai, Mediterranean, seafood, game, bread or pasta making, or perhaps chocolate puddings and sweet treats are just a few examples of what’s available. 

Courses can also be tailored to children and families providing some special bonding time whilst learning some new culinary skills in a fun and relaxed environment.

Alison Sutherland

Alison is based in one of the most picturesque towns in the Scottish Borders and runs her own business ‘Cook in Melrose’ which combines her two passions - cooking and teaching.  Following a career as a teacher, Alison enrolled as a student at the highly regarded New Town Cookery School in Edinburgh and loved the experience so much, she decided to establish her own catering business.

She is passionate about food, taking pleasure in discovering the food culture of different countries, and in creating and tasting new dishes.

Alison offers an extensive range of cookery courses from her base in Melrose which can tailored to meet the needs of the individual or group.  The choice of course is entirely yours but here are just a few ideas to whet your appetite.......

A typical cookery workshop will run from 10.00am to 1.00-1.30pm. The day will begin with coffee, and guests will then be guided through the process of cooking 2 or 3 dishes which can be enjoyed at the end of the session over a relaxed glass of wine.  Non-cooking guests are welcome to join for lunch.

In addition to cookery classes, Alison can provide for larger numbers by joining groups at their holiday home. Lasting between 2-2.5 hours, this session will showcase the food culture of the Scottish Borders and comprise a cookery demonstration followed by a tasting of some of the region’s finest local produce.

Livvy Cawthorn

Livvy is an award-winning professional caterer who has devoted her working life to cooking. She started her outside catering business some 23 years ago, after growing up as a farmer’s daughter and working as a cook in a country house.

Well-known throughout North Northumberland and the Scottish Borders for her delight in and support for local produce, she serves ‘slow food’ wherever possible and is only too happy to discuss the provenance of her ingredients. 

She honed her skills working for the internationally regarded ‘Books for Cooks’ in Notting Hill, London testing recipes from the thousands of cookbooks on its shelves, as well as running cookery classes and demonstrations for passionate foodies in this vibrant city location. 

Livvy would be delighted to join you at your holiday home to showcase the very best produce the Borders and Northumberland has to offer where guests can enjoy a cookery demonstration and then savour the results over lunch or a cosy supper at the end.

Edinburgh New Town Cookery School

The New Town Cookery School has a host of awards to its name and is set in the heart of the cultural city of Edinburgh with panoramic views across the Firth of Forth. Spanning five floors, it has a fully equipped teaching kitchen offering a broad spectrum of courses for all levels and abilities. 

It is ideal for guests who wish to experience a relaxed break in the peaceful surroundings of the Scottish Borders or North Northumberland but who would perhaps like to dip into City life for a day or two. 

Teaching classic and creative cookery, the school runs regular 1-3 day courses covering everything from - Cooking with an Aga, Japanese Cuisine, Fish & Shellfish, Gluten Free Baking, Mediterranean Kitchen, Patisserie or Chocolate Delights.....as well as many more!
