Coastal bedrooms - interior inspiration

Here at Crabtree & Crabtree we readily admit to time spent swooning over the varied interiors in our portfolio. With spring underway and the sunshine beaming through our office windows we’ve spent recent weeks dreaming of long days on the beach. We spoke to some of our coastal owners about the interiors inspiration behind some of our most popular coastal bedrooms.

Neville Tower, Bamburgh Castle

As part of iconic Bamburgh Castle, the uniqueness and historic importance of this enchanting building speaks for itself and we wanted to reflect that with period styling in keeping with the property, including heritage colours by Farrow & Ball, Jim Lawrence lighting, bespoke curtains and cushions in sumptuous crewel, linen and velvet fabrics and beautiful wool throws by innovative Welsh designer Melin Tregwynt.

Both bedrooms in Neville Tower offer unbeatable views over Bamburgh’s spectacular beach – it’s certainly worth getting up to watch the sun rise from your position high above sea level.

Rennington House

I tried to create a farmhouse fun feel with a seashore colour scheme for this room, sourcing Aspace throws and rug and Headboard Workshop headboards in pales blues, greys and taupe. The designer lamps came from Homesense and the furniture from a fantastic local antique auction. The beds are zip and link to switch between singles and a superking, which offers perfect flexibility for large family groups, and the lovely fireplace was uncovered when we decorated the room in peony and pebble from the Laura Ashley range.

Guests always comment on the lovely linen from Soak & Sleep and say how well they sleep… the calm bedroom décor may be a factor, but I expect the nights of good sleep are a lot to do with the sea air from bracing walks on the stunning beaches from Bamburgh to Howick!

When it comes to spending precious family time in Northumberland, our favourite walk is the loop from Dunstanburgh Castle south to Craster for a potter round the harbour, a pint at The Jolly Fisherman and a coffee at Shoreline. Alternatively, we head north leaving behind the dramatic castle and head past the bobbing boats to The Ship Inn at Low Newton for a crab sandwich and a pint of local beer and back round past the nature reserve where we always sneak in for a look at the birds from the hide and then a day dream about which beach hut we’d like to own! Popping into Eleanor’s Byre for a bit of retail therapy is essential on the way home to Rennington House!

Sandhills

This delightful coastal hideaway is nestled in the dunes behind Bamburgh Beach and we wanted to create a fresh, neutral interior scheme in keeping with the surroundings whilst avoiding a clichéd coastal look.

Farrow & Ball’s Elephant’s Breath was used throughout the cottage with interior accents in cool coastal colours. We sourced the cushions and throw from Loaf, the lovely glass base lamps from John Lewis, fabric for the blinds is Clarke & Clarke, the crisp bed linen is from Soak & Sleep and bedroom furniture sourced from Coach House.

From the garden it’s just a hop, skip and jump over the sand dunes to the wide golden sands of Bamburgh Beach… with Bamburgh Castle as the backdrop we can’t think of anywhere better to start and end each day whilst staying at Sandhills!

Kingfisher Cottage

The simplicity and charm of this enchanting cottage, in the centre of picture-postcard perfect Bamburgh village, serve as a fitting backdrop to the understated, classic New England interior styling with a blend of soft natural colours inspired by beach pebbles and driftwood.

This spacious double bedroom, with its charming church style window, is a super spot for relaxation. Farrow & Ball’s Skylight serves as a perfect backdrop to Clarke & Clarke fabrics, a Melin Tregwynt throw and Coach House furniture. Lamps and a rug from John Lewis finish the look which ensures guests enjoy a restful night’s sleep after days spent adventuring throughout Northumberland!
