The Borders makes for great walking country – be it yomping in the hills, pottering around the cobbled streets of the pretty Borders market towns or nipping up the road to the local pub. And as the saying goes ‘good shoes take you to good places’ and so, in the spirit of sharing, Emma Crabtree and Penelope Chilvers have teamed up to give us the low-down on the best digs – and the best boots – for your adventures in the glorious Scottish Borders.
Head Gardener's House at Floor's Castle | Kelso, sleeps 4 & 2 dogs
One for the garden lovers: a picture-perfect house sitting within the walled gardens of the historic Floors Castle. Meticulously restored by the Duchess of Roxburghe and her team, the interiors are impeccably elegant and the four-acre Walled Garden – which is all yours outside of Castle opening hours – won’t disappoint.
And the shoes to match? We love Penelope’s High Sevillana Dali Espadrilles in aquamarine: “Great for summer garden parties, and better still when you have the whole weekend staying in the garden. The perfect footwear for a stay at Floors.”
The Railway Carriage | Near Melrose, sleeps 2 & 1 dog
This former train carriage turned stylish getaway is the ultimate in Scandi chic, complete with a woodfired hot tub and a bamboo-clad bath: both positioned to admire the gorgeous hill views and starry skies.
And the shoes to match? It’s got to be Penelope’s Embroidered Pool Sliders: “There’s no better feeling than slipping on our pool sliders on a hot summer’s day. These have been a customer favourite this season, super comfortable and cool in hot temperatures.”
Rowchester West Lodge | Near Coldstream, sleeps 4
An impossibly-romantic Victorian gate lodge with an organic garden teeming with butterflies, bees and blooms. The creative eye of the artist owner makes for a quirky characterful interior, and its peaceful rural surroundings need only be shared with the resident deer, foxes, pheasants, owls and passing racehorses.
And the shoes to match? We’d opt for Penelope’s Long Tassel Boots: “A great choice for a country weekend away. They are perfect for long walks or hopping on that passing racehorse and heading for the hills!”
School House, Milne Graden | Near Coldstream, sleeps 6 & 3 dogs
Formerly the school for the Milne Graden Estate, this beautiful River Tweed property is perfect for those with furry friends in tow. Dog-friendly would be an understatement: visiting pooches receive a doggy welcome pack, mapped dog walks and can spend the weekend exploring the estate’s Tails of the Tweed dog park.
And the shoes to match? We’d opt for Penelope’s Long Tassel Inclement Boot: “Our most practical boot for all country pursuits as they’re fully waterproof and incredibly easy to clean. Perfect for paddling in the Tweed and yomps round the Milne Graden Estate with the dog.”
Fairnilee House | Near Galashiels, sleeps 16 & 3 dogs
A spectacular Edwardian mansion rising above the River Tweed with corner towers, stacks of original features and over 380 acres of gardens, park and woodland. This one is perfect for large parties: there’s ample space inside and out, and more entertaining and games rooms than you can shake a stick at.
And the shoes to match? Easy, it’s Penelope’s Studio Trainers: “Our Studio Trainers are the best shoes to brighten up any outfit. They’re extremely comfortable - I take them everywhere! They’re ideal for an action-packed weekend with family or friends at Fairnilee.”
Terms and Conditions:
This competition is open to over 18s and closes at midnight on Friday 21st July 2023. The winner will be selected at random and will be contacted via email by both Penelope Chilvers and Crabtree & Crabtree to arrange prize delivery and their C&C stay. The winner will then be announced on Monday 24th July 2023.
The maximum retail price of the Penelope Chilvers shoes cannot surpass £500. This prize is non-transferable and cannot be exchanged for cash. The voucher for both prizes is valid until 31st August 2023 and the C&C stay must be taken in 2023. Stays are subject to availability.
If a stay is worth less than the prize value no refund will be given for the difference in price. If a stay exceeds the value of the voucher, the winner will need to pay the difference. This voucher can only be used for a stay at one of our Scottish Borders properties and does not cover any extras such as Crabtree & Crabtree’s doorstep delivery service, the use of a private chef, dog fees, fishing or C&C experiences etc.
