From splashing through rivers and playing Pooh sticks to rock pooling and racing across open country there are copious adventures to be had in our wild and rugged regions.

Our friends over at Muddy Puddles share our passion for getting families to spend time outdoors and very much live by the mantra ‘there’s no such thing as bad weather – only bad clothing!’.

We’re delighted to have teamed up with them to offer you the chance to win a £200 voucher to spend on a Crabtree & Crabtree holiday, plus a £100 voucher to spend on a brilliant holiday wardrobe from Muddy Puddles to keep your little adventurers warm and dry. With the Easter holidays, May half term and a bevy of Bank Holidays around the corner, there are plenty of opportunities to gather your brood for a good old-fashioned family getaway. Spring is a wonderful time to be outside with the children: the spectacular British countryside really comes to life and – dare we say it – the sun might even shine!

To help inspire your next family adventure, we’ve rounded up our top picks of things to do in Northumberland and the Scottish Borders this spring, where to stay to do them and what Muddy Puddles gear to pack so that you’ll enjoy them whatever the weather! Drawn from our collection of C&C Experiences, each activity is exclusively available to C&C guests and showcases the best of the local area:

Seashore safaris – Northumberland

One of the great joys of a seaside holiday is dabbling in a spot of rock pooling and what better way to learn about the UK’s superb sea life than on a private, ranger-guided seashore safari. Armed with nets, buckets and a waterproof seashore guide you’ll take a closer look at crabs, sea slugs, starfish, shrimps, anemones and seaweed, gleaning interesting facts about them and their natural habitats as you go.

Where to stay: Wild Chive Lodge, Bamburgh (sleeps 6 & 1 dog)

What to pack: Reliable waterproofs. We all know how unpredictable the great British weather can be, so we highly recommend bringing a waterproof jacket or puddlesuit for those unexpected sudden downpours. Muddy Puddles’ EcoSplash Jackets and Puddlesuits are highly waterproof (to 10,000mm), highly breathable, and feature a warm fleece lining to keep those North-Easterly winds at bay.

Wildlife ranger experience – Scottish Borders

Rewild your child and let them follow in the footsteps of a local wildlife ranger on a half-day nature walk adventuring through the woods and along riverbanks in the Scottish Borders. Kitted out with binoculars, spotting scopes and thermal imaging equipment, as well as their very own ranger jumper, they’ll learn all about the local wildlife while looking out for birdlife, otter and roe deer.

With conservation at the heart of life as a ranger, your mini explorers can also get involved in community wildlife projects, topping up bird feeders, planting wildflowers, building bird boxes and monitoring birdlife and butterflies.

Where to stay: The Five Turrets, Selkirk (sleeps 8)

What to pack: We never go anywhere without a good pair of wellies! Perfect for adventures in the wood, in the countryside, or at the beach, they are a must have for a staycation, come rain or shine! Muddy Puddles’ Puddlestomper Wellies feature eye-catching prints, cleated grippy soles, and are extra tall to keep little toes warm and dry. For extra warmth, their Puddleflex Wellies are lined with fleece, and have a faux fur trim and lace tie, making them super comfortable.

Conservation treasure hunt – Berwickshire Coast

Taking place on the sandy arc-shaped bay at Coldingham, this beachy treasure hunt focuses on all the natural gems that can be found along the shoreline. Led by an ex-St Abbs ranger, you and your brood will spend several hours scouring the beach for feathers, colourful pebbles and slimy seaweed. Paying particular attention to the natural colours and textures of marine life, your guide will also teach you about what shouldn’t be there – plastic and small bits of washed-up rubbish, which you’ll collect as you go on a mini beach clean, learning how it arrived there and how it impacts the local environment.

Where to stay: Crosslea, Coldingham (sleeps 6+2 & 2 dogs)

What to pack: Beach trips are never complete without a dip – or at least a paddle! – in the waves. Ideal for drying off and warming up in afterwards, Muddy Puddles’ towelling ponchos will keep active explorers warm and dry after all that splashing in the sea. Or, if you want to keep your little ones warm and dry, their snuggly waterproof robes, made with a 100% recycled 'lambswool' polyester fleece inner and a full hood to keep the wind and rain out, will keep them cosy while having fun.

So, if you’re after a raucous rosy-cheeked adventure in the UK, we’re confident we’ll have something that fits the bill. We can’t wait to show you around!
