The Scottish Borders alone boasts over 1,500 miles of walking routes where you can step back in time, discover landscapes that have inspired literary masterpieces and choose between challenging long distance routes and short country rambles. Northumberland is home to two Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the North Pennines and the Northumberland Coast and of course a National Park which alone has more than 600 miles of way marked footpaths and bridleways to choose from.

As we approach arguably the most romantic day of the year, we thought it would be fun to see what really does capture the essence of true romance and what makes a romantic destination. If the thought of sharing a candlelit dinner for two with roses and love heart balloons along with 50 other lovestruck couples on the 14th February leaves you cold, then we explore the notion of what it means to be truly romantic. As we are almost through January this is naturally the time when we start to think ahead to holidays. And as a nation of seasoned travellers we are all well aware of travel terminology and are pretty good at finding what we are looking for. The traditional accommodation labels of Hotel, B&B and Self Catering have been added to with more distinct labels such as boutique hotel, glamping, eco lodges and romantic bolthole. But....
