A fabulous and beautifully presented property with superb, far-reaching views over the Cheviot Hills and the rivers Whiteadder and Blackadder.

The overall feel is very much of a warm, family home that has evolved over the years bursting with character and interesting pieces at every turn. Original artwork, unusual objets d’art and pieces collected on the owners’ travels grace the rooms with attractive antique furniture sitting alongside bespoke contemporary pieces, bold rugs and cosy plaid throws.

There is ample space for families and large groups with a huge, light-filled open plan living area, a pretty breakfast room, a cosy snug and a TV room / playroom.

There is plenty of wet weather entertainment with two TV rooms, a piano, guitar and sheet music for budding musicians, a state-of-the-art sound system in the main living area, a PlayStation 2 and an extensive DVD library, books and board games.

The individually-styled bedrooms – two king, one twin and two single - are beautifully presented in muted, restful tones with splashes of colour from pretty fabrics, cosy tweed blankets, eye-catching original artwork and delightful quirky touches such as the original French railway signs rescued during WW1.

Outside is a pretty, mature garden with plenty of lawn for children to play. A west facing terrace with outside seating and barbecue is a delightful spot for watching the sun set over the hills whilst dining al fresco in the summer months. Whitehall West Lodge truly offers guests the best of both worlds.

Local amenities

The rural setting is peaceful and yet the house is within walking distance of Chirnside and Allanton (0.7 miles) both of which have excellent pubs. There is also a small Co-op supermarket in Chirnside and fine dining at Chirnside Hall just outside the village.

The charming market town of Duns is just 6 miles from the property offering a good range of small town shopping including a butchers, bakery, country and fishing store, a supermarket as well as a small selection of local gift and coffee shops.

For a greater choice, including larger supermarkets, the historic town of Berwick-upon-Tweed is10 miles away including a Marks & Spencers food outlet, and a good selection of cafes, pubs and restaurants, including the very popular Maltings Kitchen with adjoining arts and theatre venue. Head to the quayside and you can purchase lobster, scallops or wild Scottish salmon fresh from the day’s catches from the Berwick Shellfish Company or order direct to have a perfect seafood platter delivered to your holiday home.

For eating out, the Inn at Allanton (0.7 miles) or the Wheatsheaf at Swinton (6 miles) or are both renowned for serving dishes full of fresh local flavours amidst relaxed, convivial surroundings. Alternatively for a perfect pint and lovely ambient surroundings, the newly refurbished Cross Inn at Paxton is developing a super reputation for its excellent local menu and friendly atmosphere. A little further afield, the Collingwood Arms at Cornhill (12 miles) is an elegant setting for lingering lunches or fine evening dining.

Activities and attractions

For sightseeing, the property is an ideal base for exploring the wider area with its magnificent countryside steeped in a turbulent and romantic history, punctuated by imposing castles, including Floors, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, and Thirlestane; the evocative ruins of abbeys at Kelso, Melrose and Dryburgh; and the grand stately homes and gardens of nearby Paxton, Manderston and Mellerstain.

The stunning heritage coastline is just a short twenty minute drive with miles of pristine sandy beaches, jolly pubs serving the freshest fish and chips, and picture postcard coastal villages with charming galleries and gift shops.

Birdwatchers, walkers and photographers will delight in the stunning cliffs and coves of the Berwickshire coastline where you will spot thousands of seabirds and seals around the St. Abbs Nature Reserve or cross the causeway at low tide to the very beautiful Holy Island of Lindisfarne where you will experience nature at its very best.

There are some wonderful walks around the area, and more serious walkers and cyclists can link into a number of long distance routes including the Berwickshire Coastal Path, or St.Cuthberts Way which take in the spectacular scenery and rich wildlife of the area but which all have easier stretches and shorter routes for those seeking a more leisurely pace.

Walk for miles on the stunning sandy beaches around Bamburgh or simply enjoy the simple pleasures of a picnic watching kite surfers soar across the bay on sands which remain almost deserted even in the summer months.

Kitchen - with Belfast sink, double electric ovens, electric and gas hobs, integral microwave, fridge and dishwasher. There is a large fridge / freezer, washing machine and dryer in the utility room/boot room.

Breakfast room - seats 8.

Snug / TV room - Freesat TV, DVD player and wood burner.

Playroom - with piano, guitar and sheet music, TV, PS2 with games, French doors to the garden.

Cloakroom - with WC and basin.

Boot room / utility room - with large fridge / freezer, washing machine and dryer.

Garage/games Room - with table tennis table, secure storage for bicycles, and other outdoor kit. Two sets of golf clubs are available on request for guests to use.

Bedroom 5 - with 3’ single bed. Hanging space is provided by hooks on the back of the door.

First floor

Bedroom one - with 5’ bed, extensive fitted wardrobes and cupboards.

En suite - shower room with underfloor heating, walk in power shower, basin and WC.

Bedroom two - with 5’ bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe.

Bedroom three - with two 3’ twin beds, fitted wardrobe and cupboards.

Bedroom four - with 3’ single bed and hanging space provided by hooks on back of the door.

Family bathroom - with bath with power shower over, basin and WC.

Temporary bed - a good quality temporary bed is available on request for an additional guest. This can be placed in Bedroom 5, or Bedroom 3 if this room is to be used by children. There is a fee of £35 for 1 to 4 nights and £50 for 5 nights or more.

Wi-Fi and mobile coverage
BT Wi-Fi is available throughout the house. There is adequate mobile coverage on most networks.

Guest amenities
The beds are made up with excellent quality Egyptian cotton bed linen and feather and duck down duvets and pillows. A hair dryer is supplied in the master bedroom. Bath sheets and hand towels are provided for all guests. Complimentary guest toiletries are also provided.

Central heating throughout. Two wood burning stoves - generous supply of logs is provided.

Babies and children

Garden and grounds
Whitehall West Lodge is set in a delightful, mature garden with plenty of lawn for children to play, however please note there is a road to the side of the property and the garden is unfenced therefore young children and pets will require supervision. Please contact us if you have any concerns. There is a terrace with an outside dining area and a charcoal barbecue.

There is ample private, off road parking for 3 - 4 cars.

Whitehall West Lodge can be taken on a purely self-catered basis, or a cook is available throughout guest’s stay, for breakfasts or dinners only or to provide one-off celebratory meals for a special occasion. A homemade meal delivery is available which is popular for guest’s first night and wine delivery is available in conjunction with renowned wine merchants Corney & Barrow.
