Tweedside is everything a cottage should be, petit and perfectly formed, furnished in a fresh country style with a cosy open fire.
Nestled on the magnificent Milne Graden Estate which sits on the border of Scotland and Northumberland, the cottage has been refurbished to the highest standard throughout using a soft gentle palette which will ease you into relaxation in no time.
Soothing blues and neutrals feature throughout the open plan ground floor with a stylish sofa upholstered in hydrangea highland tweed, high-backed armchairs in herringbone recycled wool and a lovely casual dining space in soft limed oak.
Upstairs, the scheme continues into the two comfortable bedrooms furnished with crisp linens and lovely coastal accents. The ground floor bathroom boasts the best vista of any bathroom we know.
Outside guests can enjoy amazing 180 degree views of the river from the garden. Look out for the odd deer, otter, kingfisher and the occasional leaping salmon.
Tweedside is part of a hamlet of properties comprising Hamilton House, School House and Swan's Nest. These properties can be hired collectively for larger groups wishing to holiday together but maintain a degree of privacy.
Head to Norham (4 miles) for a fantastic selection of quality local produce, including meats, pies, and cheeses from Foreman’s, or the Cornhill Village Shop (5 miles) for coffee, cake and scrummy picnic lunches. It is also home to the highly regarded Collingwood Arms for elegant evening dining, or a short drive will take you to the Allanton Inn (6 miles) which has a superb reputation for serving excellent locally sourced food amidst relaxed, convivial surroundings.
Alternatively Coldstream is a quaint but bustling little town with a rich history sitting on the north side of the River Tweed right on the Scottish/English Border. The shopping here is small and friendly with a good mix of independent outlets running the length of the High Street, including a family butchers, bakery and small Co-op supermarket for holiday essentials, as well as a super art gallery and interiors shop for lifestyle gifts and accessories.
More extensive shopping, restaurants and amenities can be found in the picturesque town of Kelso (12 miles) which is also home to the 12th Century Abbey, Floors Castle, the Roxburghe Championship Golf Course, National Hunt Racing as well as the outstanding Roux restaurant at the Roxburghe Hotel.
Activities and attractions
The local area is packed with interest. Hike through the Cheviot Hills or stroll across stunning beaches. Go kite-surfing or coastal kayaking. Marvel at the silver staircase at Manderston House. Take a boat trip to the Farne Islands, home to thousands of seabirds and a grey seal colony. Or treat yourself to lunch at the Terrace Café at Floors Castle, nominated as one of the top ten cafés in Scotland.
With the Tweed on the doorstep, this is an ideal base for fishing parties. The estate’s own beat which is available to guests at additional cost (subject to availability) extends to about 1.4 miles of single bank fishing. Milne Graden is primarily a salmon beat but has good runs of grilse and sea trout through the summer months. Other prime beats include Tillmouth, Lennel, Ladykirk and The Lees. If you can tear yourself away from the view, the local area has plenty of other delights in store.
From here you can explore a historic landscape, punctuated by imposing castles like Floors, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh, Thirlestane and Alnwick, the evocative ruins of abbeys at Kelso, Melrose and Dryburgh and stately mansions at nearby Paxton, Manderston and Mellerstain. Head to the coast for miles of golden sands and secluded rocky coves. Some of our favourite spots are the stunning beach at Bamburgh, the magnificent views from the cliffs at St Abb’s Head and the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne.?
On the way home, pop in for a pint of local ale at The Black Bull at Etal, Northumberland’s only thatched pub. Or let us arrange for dinner to be delivered to you, light the fire, pour yourself a glass of something nice and relax.

"We really enjoyed staying there. Wonderful location and were appreciative of the very high standards in beds and bedding armchairs sofa etc." - Lamb, September 2017
"All I can say is that we were very, very impressed with Tweedside and the Borders/Northumberland region in general. We shall definitely be returning to this outstanding area and Crabtree & Crabtree will be our first port of call." - Hilton, June 2016
"I would just like to thank you for the wonderful stay we had at Tweedside last week. The weather could have been kinder but the cottage was wonderfully cosy, the log fire was much welcomed in the evenings. The cottage was beautifully equipped and contained everything one required. The shower was by far the best I have had in any other cottage I have stayed in. The 'welcome pack' by far exceeded our expectations, thank you so much. A wonderful holiday and fantastic location. We hope to return next year." - Ellwood, May 2016
"We had a lovely week in Tweedside. It was extremely warm and charming and an ideal location. The log fire was delightful and the supply of logs more than adequate. The welcome hamper was lovely - far more than I have ever had in any previous holiday cottage. A particularly nice touch was the dog bowl and biscuits!" - Porter, October 2015
"We were very happy with both the booking process and the holiday accommodation. We found Crabtree & Crabtree very straightforward to deal with: the website was very good; booking arrangements were clear; staff on the phone were very helpful. We booked at quite short notice and really appreciated the additional help and flexibility we were afforded. We would be more than happy to book through Crabtree & Crabtree again." - Friel, July 2015
"We can confirm that our holiday was faultless. The accommodation and attention to detail were first class. Just having a welcome pack on arrival, especially so well thought of in the “holiday bag” at Milne Graden was a lovely thought. We are of the opinion that as we live in a nice home, we want to holiday in one too and very often are let down by “over-described” properties. However, we have to say that this was not the case since finding the Crabtree & Crabtree website. Everything was perfect, so much so that we are booking again with you for September and we are happy to inform all our friends and colleagues of what a fabulous holiday we had." - Blackaby, July 2015
