A quintessential country cottage, this very lovely property rests gently on the edge of the original walled garden on the Teviot Bank Estate amidst glorious scenery. For those craving a little of the good life, this pretty cottage will hit the right note for fishing, walking, and cycling pursuits along tranquil river valleys or simply cosying-up with a good book in front of the dancing flames of a real fire. When a lazy lunch beckons, the charming village pub is just a mile from the door.
The beauty of this cottage is the peaceful country setting yet is ideal for sightseeing and exploring the wonderful attractions of the area. Warm and inviting, the cottage benefits from an open plan sitting room with woodburner and dining space leading to a bright, sunny kitchen, while a separate sitting room adds a dash of Nordic elegance for relaxed socialising or just a little time-out.
The bathroom on the ground floor has a plentiful supply of hot water whilst upstairs, two double bedrooms (one double, one twin) have delightful combed ceilings and scenic views out towards Ruberslaw Hill. Crisp linens from the White Company, gorgeous furnishing fabrics from Scottish design company Inchyra, along with sumptuous goose down duvets and pillows should help to ease you into a restful sleep.
The front of the cottage looks out over arable land leading down to the River Teviot while a pretty garden to the rear is an idyllic spot for sunshine days watching the comings and goings of wandering wildlife passing on by.
The picturesque village of Denholm sits just 1 mile from the cottage where you will find an excellent butcher, post office, two pubs serving good food, two cafes and the charming ‘Denholm Meet’ with a cafe/bistro on the ground floor and antiques and interiors shop upstairs. A little further afield will take you to Ancrum (8.5 miles) for superb gastro pub dining at the Cross Key Inn along with a fine craft ale from multi-award winning microbrewery 'Born in the Borders'
You will find a more extensive range of amenities in Hawick (5 miles) including a deli, butchers shops and a number of large supermarkets for stocking up on those everyday essentials.
Activities and attractions
The location of Garden Cottage means that it is perfectly placed for walking, cycling and exploring the great outdoors. There are thirteen designated walks around this area from short 2 mile stretches to more demanding 8 mile hill hikes taking in beautiful countryside and rolling border hills. The Borders Abbeys Way is a circular walk which takes in the spectacular remnants of four 12th century abbeys and the route passes nearby - a pretty stretch which follows the course of the River Teviot and ends at the historically significant Horse Memorial in Hawick which celebrates the ‘callants’ victory in the 1514 Battle of Hornshole. You can also follow the Ruberslaw Circular Route, a 5 mile hike where you will be rewarded with breathtaking views to the Cheviots, or the 6 mile Minto Hills route which starts and finishes at Denholm Village Green - a perfect spot to enjoy tea and cake after the day’s exertions!
Similarly, there is some fantastic cycling and mountain biking to be had here from family friendly leisure routes to more challenging hill terrain including the NCN Route 1, Four Abbeys Cycleway, Tweed Cycleway, and Borderloop tour. Local trails includes the Denholm Circular (14 miles), Cavers & Stobs (19 miles), and Vertish Hill Loop (7 miles). For dedicated mountain biking trails, The 7Stanes centre at Newcastleton is 25 miles away, and the Kielder Forest Park is 23 miles.
The nearby town of Hawick is home to the finest quality Scottish cashmere and knitwear, where guests can follow the Textile Trail which includes visitor centres and museums as well as factory and retail outlets, with everything from finest quality cashmere, unique sample pieces or perhaps just some rather natty woolly socks!
For a little bit of history or maybe even tracing your Scottish ancestry, head to the Heart of Hawick, a superb new arts and heritage project which includes the Textile Towerhouse Museum, as well as the Scottish Archive whose registrar and genealogy services can help you on the path of re-connecting with your Scottish roots. For wet-weather fun, the Teviotdale Leisure Centre has a pool and other activities to keep children happy and entertained, and the Tower Mill Hub has a cinema, theatre and cafe.
A short drive will take you to ‘Born in the Borders’, a super new visitor centre with shop, cafe/ restaurant, riverside walks and micro-brewery bringing together the very best of all things produced and created here. Next explore the pretty Border towns of Melrose, Kelso and Jedburgh where you will find an excellent range of independent shopping, the magnificent ruins of Border Abbeys, the elegance of Floors Castle, and the grand stately homes and gardens of Abbotsford, Mellerstain, Manderston and Bowhill. The outstanding cultural city of Edinburgh is an easy day trip - just over an hour by car from the property.
Not to be missed are some of the events and festivals running during the course of the year - our historic Common Ridings and Cavalcades, Border Rugby Sevens, National Hunt Racing at Kelso, the epic Borders Book Festival as well as Food Festivals, Music Festivals and Walking Festivals.
For golfing, the 18 hole Minto course lies approximately1.1 miles north of the property, a gem of a parkland course with wide challenging holes and the very aptly named ‘Everest’ at the 12th. Across the wider area, you have a vast choice from stunning parkland tracts to PGA courses, including the Roxburghe Championship course at Kelso. There is clay shooting at Braidwood and fishing and shooting days can all be arranged nearby.
For riding, the area has rich historical connection dating back to the Border Reivers in the 13th and 14th century and the Ian Stark Equestrian Centre and Broomhill Riding Centre both have an illustrious reputation for training those new to the sport through to advanced riders looking to refine their technique and skill set.
The cottage sits on two floors.

Open plan living/dining/kitchen - with double sofa and armchairs, wood burning stove, and dining space for 4. The kitchen is well equipped with oven, ceramic hob, fridge, freezer, 3/4 dishwasher, and microwave. Please note that there is a step down from the living area to the kitchen which may be a consideration for guests with restricted mobility. There is a washing machine and dryer in a storage cupboard to the rear of the property.

Bathroom - bath with shower-over and a separate handheld shower, heated towel rail, basin and WC.

There is storage space with hanging rail on the landing between the bedrooms.

Garden and grounds
There is a small garden to the front of the property and a large lawned area to the side aspect. A pretty patio sits to the rear with garden furniture and barbecue overlooking mature planting and woodland. The rear garden is fully enclosed. Secure storage for bikes can be provided on request.
There is private parking for two cars to the front of the cottage.
The cottage is detached and benefits from a private location on the Teviot Bank Estate and is not overlooked.
